1500 - Front Brake Pads & Rotors Replacement 🛠️

Nice job taking this on. I’ll walk you through it step by step, beginner-friendly.

Safety First ⚠️

  • 🧯 Work on a flat, solid surface (no dirt or slope).
  • 🧱 Always use jack stands under the frame, never rely on the jack alone.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; brake dust is nasty.
  • 🔌 Do one side at a time so you can look at the other side as a reference.

Quick Questions Before You Start ❓

  • 🧩 Do you have a torque wrench (tool that lets you tighten bolts to a specific number, like 130 ft-lb)?
  • 🧰 Do you have a floor jack and jack stands rated for a truck?

If not, I’ll still explain, but you should get them for safety.

Tools & Supplies Needed 🧰

  • 🔧 Floor jack and 2 jack stands (3-ton or higher).
  • 🔩 Lug wrench or 1/2" drive ratchet with 22 mm socket (lug nuts).
  • 🔧 Socket set:
    • 13 mm (front caliper guide pin bolts).
    • 21 mm (front caliper bracket bolts).
  • 🧱 Breaker bar (long handle for stuck bolts).
  • 🧲 Torque wrench (0–150 ft-lb range).
  • 🗜️ C-clamp or disc brake piston tool (to push caliper piston back).
  • 🪛 Flat screwdriver or small pry bar (to help remove pads).
  • 🧴 Brake cleaner spray (for cleaning rotors and hardware).
  • 🧴 High-temp brake grease (for pad contact points and slide pins).
  • 🧻 Rags or paper towels.
  • 🧷 Wire or bungee cord (to hang the caliper, not by the hose).
  • 🧪 Optional: Anti-seize compound (very thin film on hub face, not threads).

Parts You Need 📦

  • 🛞 Front brake pads (for your 2015 1500 SLT 4WD).
  • 🛞 Front brake rotors (left and right, same part number usually).
  • 🧩 New pad hardware clips (often included with pads; use them).

Key Torque Specs 🔧

  • 🔩 Front caliper guide pin bolts: ~26 ft-lb (35 N·m).
  • 🔩 Front caliper bracket bolts: ~130 ft-lb (176 N·m).
  • 🔩 Wheel lug nuts: 130 ft-lb (176 N·m) in a star pattern.

These values are typical for your 1500 generation; if you have a factory manual, use its numbers.

Prep Steps 🧼

  • 🅿️ Park the truck, set the parking brake, and put the transmission in PARK.
  • 🧱 Chock (block) the rear wheels so the truck can’t roll.
  • 🔧 Slightly loosen the front wheel lug nuts (about 1/2 turn) while the truck is still on the ground.

Lift and Support the Front 🏗️

  • 🛠️ Place the floor jack under the front frame crossmember (center front, solid metal).
  • ⬆️ Lift until both front wheels are off the ground.
  • 🧱 Place jack stands under the frame rails behind each front wheel.
  • ⬇️ Slowly lower the truck onto the stands. Give the truck a gentle push to confirm it’s stable.
  • 🚫 Leave the jack in place as a backup if possible.

Remove Front Wheels 🚙

  • 🔩 Remove the lug nuts and take off both front wheels.
  • 🧠 Tip: Slide the wheel under the frame as an extra safety backup.

Remove Caliper (One Side at a Time) 🧲

  • 👀 Turn the steering wheel to give better access to the side you’re working on.
  • 🔍 Locate the caliper (the part that squeezes the pads onto the rotor).
  • 🔩 On the back of the caliper, remove the two 13 mm guide pin bolts.
  • 🪛 Gently pry the caliper away from the rotor if it’s stuck.
  • 🧷 Hang the caliper with a wire or bungee from the spring or frame. Do not let it hang by the rubber brake hose.

Remove Old Pads & Hardware 🧱

  • 🧱 Slide the old pads out of the bracket.
  • 🧩 Remove the metal clips (hardware) from the caliper bracket.
  • 🧴 Spray the bracket with brake cleaner and wipe clean.
  • 🧠 Tip: Note how the old clips sit; install new ones the same way.

Remove Caliper Bracket & Rotor 🔧

  • 🔩 Use a 21 mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two large caliper bracket bolts on the back of the steering knuckle.
  • 🧱 Remove the caliper bracket and set it aside.
  • 🛞 Pull the rotor off the hub. If it’s stuck:
    • 🪛 Tap around the hat (center area) with a rubber mallet.
    • 🧴 You can spray a little penetrating oil around the hub center and let it sit.

Clean Hub & Prepare New Rotor 🧽

  • 🧽 Clean the hub face (where the rotor sits) with a wire brush or sandpaper until it’s smooth and free of rust lumps.
  • 🧴 Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner on both sides to remove the oily coating; wipe dry.
  • 🧪 Optional: Apply a very thin film of anti-seize on the hub face only (not on studs or rotor friction surfaces).

Install New Rotor 🛞

  • 🛞 Place the new rotor onto the hub, seated flat.
  • 🔩 Thread one lug nut on by hand to hold the rotor in place while you work.

Service Slide Pins & Hardware 🧴

  • 🔍 On the caliper bracket, pull out the slide pins (the smooth pins the caliper bolts go into).
  • 🧴 Wipe them clean and apply a thin coat of high-temp brake grease, then reinstall them so they move freely.
  • 🧩 Install the new hardware clips into the bracket. Make sure they are fully seated and not bent.

Reinstall Caliper Bracket 🔩

  • 🧱 Put the caliper bracket back over the rotor.
  • 🔩 Install the two 21 mm bracket bolts and tighten them firmly.
  • 🔧 Use your torque wrench to torque them to about 130 ft-lb.

Compress Caliper Piston 🗜️

  • 🧴 Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it’s very full, remove a little with a clean syringe or turkey baster so it doesn’t overflow when you push the pistons back.
  • 🗜️ Place an old brake pad against the piston in the caliper.
  • 🗜️ Use a C-clamp to slowly push the piston back into the caliper until it’s almost flush. Go slow to avoid damaging seals.

Install New Pads 🧱

  • 🧱 Apply a very thin layer of brake grease on the ears of the pads (where they contact the hardware clips) and on the back of the pads where they touch the caliper/piston. Do not get grease on the pad friction surface or rotor.
  • 🧩 Install the inner pad and outer pad into the bracket, making sure they sit fully in the clips and move smoothly.

Reinstall Caliper Over New Pads 🔧

  • 🧷 Take the caliper off the hanger and place it over the new pads and rotor.
  • 🔩 Align the slide pin holes and install the 13 mm guide pin bolts by hand first.
  • 🔧 Torque the guide pin bolts to about 26 ft-lb.

Repeat on the Other Side 🔁

  • 🔁 Do the exact same steps on the other front wheel.

Reinstall Wheels & Lower Truck 🚙

  • 🛞 Put the wheels back on and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  • ⬆️ Jack the truck slightly to remove the jack stands, then lower it to the ground.
  • 🔧 Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern to 130 ft-lb.

Final Steps – Very Important ✅

  • 🦶 With the engine off, pump the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pads against the rotors.
  • 🧪 Check the brake fluid level and top up to the MAX line if needed.
  • 🚗 Take a short, gentle test drive:
    • 🛑 Start with low speeds (20–30 km/h).
    • 🦶 Make several gentle stops; avoid hard braking for the first 300–500 km to bed in the pads.

Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid 🚫

  • 🧯 Forgetting to pump the brake pedal before driving (pedal will go to floor).
  • 🧴 Getting grease or oil on the rotor or pad surface.
  • 🔩 Not tightening bracket bolts and lug nuts to proper torque.
  • 🧷 Letting the caliper hang by the brake hose.
