🔧 Corolla - Front Brake and Rotor Replacement

Replace the front brake pads and rotors to restore stopping power, reduce noise, and fix brake pulsation from worn or warped rotors. On your Corolla, the front calipers, pads, and rotors are straightforward to service with basic hand tools.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting.
  • Use jack stands and never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Brake dust can be harmful. Wear safety glasses and a dust mask.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • Support each caliper with wire or a hanger so the brake hose is not stretched.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Put the transmission in Park.
  • Break the front lug nuts loose before lifting the vehicle.
  • Loosen first, lift second.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug wrench to loosen the front wheel nuts about one turn each while the car is still on the ground.
  • Do not remove them yet.

Step 2: Lift and secure the front of the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the Corolla at the proper front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the front pinch welds or approved support points.
  • Lower the vehicle onto the stands and shake it gently to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the wheel

  • Use the 21mm lug wrench to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it aside flat.

Step 4: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang the caliper with a wire hook or bungee cord so the hose is not strained.

Step 5: Remove the old brake pads

  • Pull the pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Remove the pad clips and hardware if your new kit includes them.
  • Compare old and new parts before installation.

Step 6: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • These bolts are tight, so hold the bracket steady while loosening.
  • Remove the bracket from the steering knuckle.

Step 7: Remove the old rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If it is stuck, use a rubber mallet to tap the rotor hat face from behind.
  • If there are small retaining screws, remove them with a flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 8: Clean the hub surface

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and debris from the hub face.
  • Spray the hub with brake cleaner and wipe it clean.
  • A clean hub helps prevent rotor wobble.

Step 9: Install the new rotor

  • Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove shipping oil.
  • Install the rotor onto the hub.
  • If needed, hold it in place with one lug nut hand-tight.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Position the bracket over the rotor and install the bolts by hand.
  • Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bracket bolts to 107 Nm (79 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Install the new pads and hardware

  • Install the new pad clips and hardware from the brake kit.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake caliper grease to the pad ears and contact points only.
  • Install the new pads into the bracket.
  • Do not grease the pad friction material.

Step 12: Compress the caliper piston

  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper piston tool to slowly push the caliper piston fully back into the bore.
  • Move slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood in case the level rises.
  • If fluid is near the top, remove a little with a clean syringe or turkey baster.

Step 13: Reinstall the caliper

  • Slide the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
  • Install the slide pin bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the caliper slide pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Reinstall the wheel

  • Install the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the Corolla to the ground with the floor jack.
  • Use a 21mm lug wrench or torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Repeat on the other side

  • Perform the same procedure on the opposite front wheel.
  • Always replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs.

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal several times before moving the vehicle. The pedal should become firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
  • Start with a slow test drive in a safe area.
  • Listen for rubbing or grinding noises.
  • New pads and rotors need break-in. Make several moderate stops, not hard panic stops.
  • Bed the brakes gently for best results.
