🔧 Front Brakes and Rotors - Replacement

This repair covers replacing the front brake pads and front brake rotors on your RAV4. You’ll remove the caliper and bracket, swap the rotors, then install new pads and reassemble everything with the correct torque.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a cool vehicle. Brake parts can get very hot after driving.
  • Support the vehicle with jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is removed.
  • Use care around brake dust. Avoid blowing it off with compressed air.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • If the brake fluid level is high, it may rise when the caliper piston is pushed back. Check the reservoir before compressing the piston.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 21mm lug wrench or socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Brake caliper compression tool (specialty)
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Bungee cord or mechanic’s wire
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

  • Brake caliper hardware kit - Qty: 1 set
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1 can
  • High-temperature brake grease - Qty: 1 tube

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the vehicle.
  • Keep the transmission in Park.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheels

  • Use a 21mm lug wrench or socket to loosen the front lug nuts slightly while the vehicle is still on the ground.
  • Do not remove them yet.

Step 2: Raise and secure the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the RAV4 at a proper front lift point.
  • Place the vehicle securely on jack stands.
  • Remove both front wheels with the 21mm lug wrench or socket.

Step 3: Remove the brake caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang the caliper with bungee cord or mechanic’s wire. Do not let it hang by the brake hose.
  • Torque on installation: 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)

Step 4: Remove the brake pads and hardware

  • Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Remove the pad clips and hardware from the bracket.
  • Use a flat blade screwdriver if the pads are stuck.

Step 5: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket from the steering knuckle.
  • Torque on installation: 102 Nm (75 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If it is stuck, tap it from the back side with a rubber mallet or use penetrating oil and gentle tapping.
  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face so the new rotor sits flat.

Step 7: Install the new rotor

  • Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove protective oil.
  • Install the rotor on the hub.
  • Keep the hub face perfectly clean.

Step 8: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Install the caliper bracket using the 17mm socket.
  • Tighten the bracket bolts to 102 Nm (75 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Compress the caliper piston

  • Use a brake caliper compression tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston.
  • Go slow to avoid seal damage.

Step 10: Install new pads and hardware

  • Install the new pad clips and hardware from the front brake pad set.
  • Apply a thin layer of high-temperature brake grease to the pad contact points and hardware.
  • Install the new pads in the bracket.

Step 11: Reinstall the caliper

  • Place the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the caliper slide pin bolts using the 14mm socket.
  • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and thread the lug nuts by hand.
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the pads and rotor on the other front wheel using the same steps.
  • Always replace front brake parts in pairs.

âś… After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal several times before driving until it feels firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if needed.
  • Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area first.
  • Expect a short break-in period for new pads and rotors.
  • Listen for unusual noises and recheck lug nut torque after driving.
