How to Replace Front Brake Pads and Rotors on a 2006-2018 Toyota RAV4 (Trim: Hybrid XLE | Engine: Inline 4 2.5L)
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, torque specs, and safety tips for 2006, 2007, 2008
🔧 Front Brakes & Rotors - Replacement
Your front brake pads and rotors wear together, so replacing both at the same time gives you a smoother brake feel and helps prevent noise or vibration. On your RAV4, the front brake job is straightforward, but you must support the caliper correctly and keep brake fluid from overflowing when the pistons are pushed back.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
- Do not let the brake caliper hang by the hose.
- Brake dust can be harmful; avoid blowing it off with compressed air.
- Your RAV4 is a hybrid, so make sure it is OFF and not in READY mode before starting.
- If your brake fluid reservoir is full, remove a little fluid before pushing the pistons back.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the vehicle.
- Keep the hybrid system OFF.
- Open the hood and check the brake fluid level before compressing the caliper pistons.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the vehicle
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the proper lift points.
- Support it with jack stands before working underneath or near the wheels.
- Remove both front wheels with a lug wrench or 21mm socket.
- Never rely on the jack alone.
Step 2: Remove the brake caliper
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper mounting bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
- Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or mechanic's wire.
- Do not stretch the brake hose.
Step 3: Remove the old brake pads and hardware
- Slide the brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Remove the pad clips and hardware if they are included with your new kit.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver if the pads are stuck.
Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket
- Use a 17mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
- Take the bracket off the knuckle.
- Torque on reassembly: Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Remove the old rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If it is stuck, spray penetrating oil around the hub center and tap the rotor hat area gently with a rubber mallet.
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face.
- A clean hub helps prevent brake pulsation.
Step 6: Install the new rotor
- Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove shipping oil.
- Install the rotor on the hub.
- If needed, hold it in place with a wheel lug nut finger-tight while you work.
Step 7: Install the caliper bracket
- Reinstall the caliper bracket with the 17mm socket.
- Torque the bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Install the new pads and hardware
- Install the new pad clips from the hardware kit.
- Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad contact points and slide surfaces.
- Install the new brake pads into the bracket.
- Do not get grease on the pad friction material.
Step 9: Compress the caliper piston
- Use a C-clamp or brake caliper compression tool (specialty) to push the caliper piston back slowly.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing.
- If fluid rises too high, remove a small amount before continuing.
Step 10: Reinstall the caliper
- Set the caliper over the new pads.
- Install the caliper bolts with the 14mm socket.
- Torque the bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reinstall the wheels
- Install both front wheels.
- Snug the lug nuts with a lug wrench or 21mm socket.
- Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.
Step 12: Pump the brake pedal
- Before driving, pump the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- This seats the pads against the rotors.
- Never back out of the driveway first.
✅ After Repair
- Check brake fluid level and top off if needed.
- Start with a slow test drive in a safe area.
- Listen for rubbing or clicking noises.
- Confirm the brake pedal feels firm.
- For new pads and rotors, do 5-10 gentle stops to begin the break-in process.
