🔧 Sierra 1500 - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement
You’ll remove the front wheels, take off the brake caliper and bracket, replace the pads and rotors, then reassemble and torque everything correctly. This restores safe stopping power and prevents vibration/pulsation from worn or warped rotors.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support your Sierra 1500 with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; brake dust and cleaner are irritating.
- 🔥 Brakes can be hot; let everything cool before touching the caliper/rotor.
- 🧵 Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose; support it with a hanger.
- đźš« Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed; the piston can pop out.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Breaker bar 1/2"
- Torque wrench 1/2" (50-200 ft-lbs range)
- Torque wrench 3/8" (10-50 ft-lbs range)
- Socket set 1/2" drive (13mm, 18mm)
- Ratchet 3/8" drive
- Flat blade screwdriver
- C-clamp 6"
- Wire brush
- Bungee cord or brake caliper hanger (specialty)
- Dead blow hammer
- Turkey baster
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
- Front brake rotors (match your Sierra 1500 brake package/diameter) - Qty: 2
- Front brake hardware kit (pad clips/abutments) - Qty: 1
- Brake parts cleaner - Qty: 2 cans
- High-temp silicone brake grease - Qty: 1
- Medium-strength threadlocker (blue) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and chock the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front lug nuts slightly while the tires are still on the ground.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. You may need to remove a little fluid with a turkey baster so it doesn’t overflow when you compress the caliper piston.
- If you’re unsure which rotor size your Sierra 1500 uses, measure rotor diameter before ordering parts (measure straight across the rotor face).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front end
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift one front corner at the frame/jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame and gently lower onto them.
- Repeat for the other side or do one side at a time.
Step 2: Remove the front wheels
- Use a breaker bar 1/2" and socket set 1/2" drive to remove lug nuts and remove the wheel.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench 1/2".
Step 3: Remove the brake caliper (and support it)
- Turn the steering so you can see the caliper bolts clearly.
- Use a ratchet 3/8" drive with the correct socket from your socket set 1/2" drive (13mm, 18mm) to remove the two caliper guide pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket. Use a bungee cord or brake caliper hanger (specialty) to support it. (A caliper hanger is a hook/strap that holds the caliper so the hose isn’t strained.)
- Reinstall spec (later): Torque to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench 3/8".
Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware
- Pull the brake pads out of the bracket by hand. If stuck, gently pry with a flat blade screwdriver.
- Remove the pad abutment clips (hardware) from the bracket.
Step 5: Remove the caliper bracket
- Use a breaker bar 1/2" and socket set 1/2" drive (13mm, 18mm) to remove the two caliper bracket bolts (these are tight).
- Reinstall spec (later): apply medium-strength threadlocker (blue) and Torque to 221 Nm (163 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench 1/2".
Step 6: Remove the rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If it’s rust-stuck, spray the hub area with brake parts cleaner, then tap the rotor hat firmly using a dead blow hammer until it breaks free.
- Hit rotor hat, not the wheel studs.
Step 7: Clean and prep the hub and new rotor
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face (where the rotor sits).
- Spray the new rotor’s braking surfaces with brake parts cleaner and wipe dry (removes protective oil).
Step 8: Install the new rotor
- Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
- To keep it from wobbling while you work, thread on one lug nut by hand (use your socket set 1/2" drive to snug lightly).
Step 9: Reinstall the caliper bracket and new hardware
- Position the bracket over the rotor.
- Install the bracket bolts by hand first, then tighten using a breaker bar 1/2".
- Final tighten: Torque to 221 Nm (163 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench 1/2".
- Install the new pad clips from the front brake hardware kit into the bracket.
Step 10: Compress the caliper piston
- Place an old brake pad against the caliper piston face.
- Use a C-clamp 6" to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir level while compressing. If it rises too high, remove a little using the turkey baster.
- Go slow to avoid damaging the piston.
Step 11: Install the new pads and reinstall the caliper
- Apply a thin film of high-temp silicone brake grease to pad “ears” where they slide in the clips (do not get grease on pad/rotor friction surfaces).
- Install the new pads into the bracket by hand.
- Set the caliper over the pads/rotor.
- Install the caliper guide pin bolts using a ratchet 3/8" drive.
- Final tighten: Torque to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench 3/8".
Step 12: Reinstall wheels and lower the truck
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts.
- Snug lug nuts in a star pattern using a breaker bar 1/2".
- Lower the truck using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), then final tighten: Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench 1/2" in a star pattern.
âś… After Repair
- Before moving the truck, pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pads against the rotors).
- Check brake fluid level and top off if needed.
- With the engine running, hold the brake and confirm normal pedal feel.
- Road test at low speed first. Listen for grinding and verify straight, smooth stops.
- Pad bedding (break-in): make 8-10 medium stops from 40 to 10 mph, with short cool-down driving between stops. Avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles.
