🔧 Sierra 1500 - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, take off the brake calipers and brackets, replace the rotors, then install new brake pads. Doing pads and rotors together helps prevent pulsation (shaking) and uneven braking.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Sierra 1500 with jack stands on a solid, level surface—never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner and avoid blowing dust with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose—support it with a bungee cord.
  • ⚠️ Brake fluid can overflow when compressing pistons—watch the reservoir and wipe spills immediately (it damages paint).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 22mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (30-250 ft-lbs range)
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 21mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)
  • C-clamp (6" or larger)
  • Caliper hanger hook or bungee cord
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Wire brush
  • Brake parts cleaner
  • Shop rags
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Qty: 2
  • Brake pad hardware/clip kit - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1 quart

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Crack the front lug nuts loose before lifting using a 22mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir level. If it’s near “MAX,” remove a little with a clean rag so it won’t overflow when you push the piston back.
  • One side at a time helps you compare parts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and remove the front wheel

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front corner.
  • Set the truck down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the lug nuts with a 22mm socket and take the wheel off.

Step 2: Remove the brake caliper (the part that squeezes the pads)

  • Turn the steering so the caliper faces outward for more room.
  • Remove the caliper slide pin bolts using a 13mm socket (some trucks use a 15mm socket—use the one that fits snug).
  • Carefully lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang the caliper from the suspension using a caliper hanger hook or bungee cord.
  • Torque to 74 Nm (55 ft-lbs) when reinstalling the caliper slide pin bolts.

Step 3: Remove the old brake pads and hardware

  • Slide the pads out of the bracket by hand.
  • Remove the pad clips/hardware using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Clean the bracket pad lands (where the clips sit) using a wire brush and brake parts cleaner.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket (the pad “frame”)

  • Remove the two caliper bracket bolts using an 18mm socket (some trucks use a 21mm socket—use the one that fits snug).
  • Set the bracket aside.
  • Torque to 221 Nm (163 ft-lbs) when reinstalling the caliper bracket bolts.

Step 5: Remove the rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If it’s stuck from rust, spray the hub area with brake parts cleaner, then tap the rotor “hat” area with a hammer to break it loose.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush so the new rotor sits flat. Flat hub = no brake shake.

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor using brake parts cleaner and shop rags (removes shipping oil).
  • Slide the rotor onto the hub.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper bracket and new hardware clips

  • Reinstall the bracket and start both bolts by hand.
  • Tighten with an 18mm socket or 21mm socket (whichever fits), then Torque to 221 Nm (163 ft-lbs).
  • Install the new pad clips/hardware into the bracket.

Step 8: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place an old brake pad against the piston face.
  • Use a C-clamp (6" or larger) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Go slow to avoid overflowing brake fluid.

Step 9: Install the new brake pads

  • Apply a thin film of brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) to the pad ears where they touch the clips (not on the pad friction material).
  • Slide the new pads into the bracket.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts using a 13mm socket or 15mm socket.
  • Torque to 74 Nm (55 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck off the jack stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 22mm socket.
  • Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the other front side

  • Repeat Steps 1–11 for the other front wheel.

✅ After Repair

  • With the engine OFF, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pistons and pads.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 if needed.
  • Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal feels normal.
  • Test-drive at low speed first and confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
  • Pad/rotor break-in: make 8–10 medium stops from 30–40 mph, with 30 seconds between stops, and avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $500-$900 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $180-$350 (parts only)

You Save: $320-$550 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-3 hours.
