🔧 Sierra 1500 - Front Brake and Rotor Replacement

Your front brake pads and rotors are a wear item, and replacing them together helps restore stopping power and reduce noise or pulsation. On your Sierra 1500, this job also requires careful retraction of the front caliper pistons so the new pads fit correctly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it off with compressed air.
  • If equipped with StabiliTrak or ABS warnings after service, check brake fluid level and scan for codes.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Breaker bar
  • 21mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Bungee cord or hook
  • C-clamp or brake caliper compression tool (specialty)
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner
  • Drain pan
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

  • Brake caliper hardware kit - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1 can

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • Open the brake fluid reservoir and check the level before compressing the calipers. If it is near full, remove a small amount so it does not overflow.
  • If your truck has an electronic parking brake warning or brake service mode in the dash, no special menu step is normally needed for front brakes on this Sierra 1500.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front of the truck

  • Use a floor jack to raise the front end at the proper lift point.
  • Support both sides with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels with a 21mm socket.
  • Keep the truck stable before starting brake work.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use an 18mm socket to remove the caliper mounting bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the rotor and hang it with a bungee cord or hook.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Slide the brake pads out of the bracket.
  • Remove the pad clips and any old hardware from the bracket.
  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the pad contact points.
  • Spray the bracket with brake cleaner and let it dry.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket and rotor

  • Use an 18mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
  • If the rotor is stuck, use a flat screwdriver through the access hole or tap the rotor hat lightly from behind.
  • Remove the rotor from the hub.

Step 5: Clean the hub and install the new rotor

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and scale from the hub face.
  • Spray the hub with brake cleaner and wipe it dry.
  • Install the new rotor onto the hub.
  • A clean hub helps prevent brake pulsation.

Step 6: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Install the caliper bracket over the rotor.
  • Use an 18mm socket to tighten the bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Install new pads and hardware

  • Install the new pad clips from the caliper hardware kit.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad contact points if included in your kit.
  • Install the new pads into the bracket.

Step 8: Compress the caliper piston and reinstall the caliper

  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper compression tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
  • Set the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the caliper bolts with an 18mm socket.
  • Torque to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel

  • Install the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck with the floor jack.
  • Use a 21mm socket to torque the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Repeat on the other side

  • Always replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs.
  • Repeat the same steps on the opposite side.

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal slowly several times before moving the truck. This seats the pads against the rotors.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if needed.
  • Test the brakes at low speed first.
  • Listen for rubbing or squealing and recheck lug nut torque after the first drive.
  • Break in the new brakes with several gentle stops from moderate speed. Do not hard-stop repeatedly right away.
