🔧 Front Brake Pads and Rotors - Replacement

Replacing the front brake pads and rotors restores stopping power, reduces noise, and fixes pulsation from worn or warped rotors. On your Silverado, the front calipers are straightforward to service, but you must support the caliper correctly and torque everything properly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and chock the rear wheels.
  • Use jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Brake components can be hot if the truck was driven recently.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
  • Keep grease, oil, and brake cleaner off the rotor and pads.
  • If the brake fluid reservoir is full, watch for overflow when pushing the caliper pistons back.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck use)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm lug wrench or socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • C-clamp or disc brake piston tool
  • Bungee cord or mechanic’s wire
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

  • Brake grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Put the transmission in Park.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • If the truck has a pad wear sensor warning, inspect the sensor during pad removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front end

  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of the truck at the proper front lift point.
  • Support both sides with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels with a 21mm lug wrench or socket.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use an 18mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the rotor carefully.
  • Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or mechanic’s wire. Never let the hose stretch.

Step 3: Remove the old pads

  • Pull the brake pads out of the bracket by hand.
  • Remove any pad clips or hardware from the bracket.
  • Inspect the pads for uneven wear, which can point to a sticking caliper or hardware issue.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket and rotor

  • Use an 18mm socket and breaker bar to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
  • If the rotor is stuck, use a breaker bar and strike the rotor hat area lightly from behind if needed.
  • Remove the rotor from the hub.

Step 5: Clean the hub and install the new rotor

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face.
  • Spray the hub with brake cleaner and wipe it clean.
  • Install the new rotor on the hub.
  • Clean hub = fewer brake pulsation problems.

Step 6: Reinstall the bracket and new hardware

  • Reinstall the caliper bracket using an 18mm socket.
  • Torque to 275 Nm (203 ft-lbs).
  • Install the new pad clips and any included hardware.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to pad contact points only.

Step 7: Compress the caliper piston

  • Use a C-clamp or disc brake piston tool to push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Move slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir.
  • Go slow to avoid seal damage.

Step 8: Install the new pads and caliper

  • Install the new pads into the bracket.
  • Reinstall the caliper over the pads and rotor.
  • Install and tighten the caliper bolts with an 18mm socket.
  • Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the wheels

  • Put the wheels back on and start the lug nuts by hand.
  • Lower the truck to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm lug wrench or socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Pump the brake pedal

  • Before moving the truck, pump the brake pedal until it feels firm.
  • This seats the pads against the rotors.
  • Do not skip this step.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if needed.
  • Start the truck and confirm the brake warning light is off.
  • Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area.
  • Expect a short pad break-in period; avoid hard stops for the first 200 miles.
  • Listen for rubbing, clicking, or grinding and recheck your work if anything sounds off.
