🔧 Silverado 1500 Front Brakes & Rotors - Replacement

This job replaces the front brake pads and front rotors on your Silverado. The brake pads clamp the rotor to stop the truck, and worn rotors can cause vibration, noise, and longer stopping distances.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and chock the rear wheels.
  • Use jack stands; never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Front brakes get hot. Let everything cool before starting.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • Keep brake fluid off paint. Wipe spills immediately.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

  • 21mm socket

  • Brake grease - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Put the transmission in Park.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • Replace rotors and pads in pairs, left and right together.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the front of the truck

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front end at the proper lift point.
  • Place the truck securely on jack stands.
  • Remove both front wheels with the 22mm lug socket and breaker bar.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use the 13mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
  • Hang the caliper with a wire or rest it safely so the brake hose is not stretched.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the hose.

Step 3: Remove the brake pads and bracket

  • Pull the brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Use the 21mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
  • Torque on reassembly: caliper bracket bolts to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the rotor

  • If the rotor is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver or tap it gently from behind.
  • Remove rust from the hub with a wire brush.
  • Clean the hub face with brake cleaner and a shop towel.
  • A clean hub helps prevent brake shake.

Step 5: Install the new rotor

  • Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove packing oil.
  • Slide the rotor onto the hub.
  • If it uses a retaining clip or screw on your truck, reinstall it now.

Step 6: Reinstall the bracket and pads

  • Install the caliper bracket using the 21mm socket.
  • Torque the bracket bolts to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad contact points and slide surfaces.
  • Install the new pads in the bracket.
  • If new hardware clips are included, replace them now.

Step 7: Compress the caliper and reinstall it

  • Use the C-clamp to slowly push the caliper piston fully back into the bore.
  • Set the caliper over the pads and bracket.
  • Install the slide pin bolts with the 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs).
  • Push the piston in slowly and evenly.

Step 8: Reinstall the wheels

  • Put both front wheels back on.
  • Snug the lug nuts with the 22mm lug socket.
  • Lower the truck to the ground.
  • Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Pump the brake pedal

  • Press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if needed.
  • Make sure the truck rolls freely before driving.

✅ After Repair

  • Test the brakes at low speed first.
  • Listen for rubbing, clunks, or squeaks.
  • Check again for any fluid leaks.
  • Bed in the new pads with several gentle stops, then moderate stops.
