🔧 Outback - Front Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the front wheels, swap the brake pads and rotors, then reassemble everything with the correct torque. This restores safe stopping power and helps prevent noise, vibration, and uneven braking.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on level ground and support the Outback with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🛑 Brake dust is harmful—avoid blowing it out with compressed air; use brake cleaner instead.
  • 🛑 Don’t let the brake caliper hang by the rubber hose—support it with a hanger.
  • 🛑 Brake fluid can damage paint—wipe spills immediately.
  • 🛑 No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Lug nut socket 19mm
  • Breaker bar 1/2-inch drive
  • Torque wrench 3/8-inch drive (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • Torque wrench 1/2-inch drive (50-150 ft-lbs range)
  • Socket 14mm
  • Socket 17mm
  • Ratchet 3/8-inch drive
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • C-clamp 6-inch
  • Bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver #3
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Front brake rotors - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Brake pad hardware kit - Qty: 1
  • Silicone brake grease - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3 or DOT 4) - Qty: 1 quart

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on level ground, put the transmission in 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧰 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • 🧰 Crack the front lug nuts loose 1/2 turn using a 19mm lug nut socket and breaker bar (do not remove them yet).
  • 🧰 Pop the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; remove the cap so fluid can rise when you compress the piston. Cover the area with a rag.
  • 🧰 “C-clamp” note: a C-clamp 6-inch is a screw clamp used to push the brake piston back in.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the front end

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the Outback at the proper front jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and confirm it’s stable by gently rocking it.
  • Remove both front wheels using a 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive.

Step 2: Remove the brake caliper (do not disconnect the hose)

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself room at the caliper.
  • Remove the two caliper slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket. If it’s stuck, gently pry with a flat blade screwdriver.
  • Hang the caliper from the strut spring using a bungee cord.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Pull the brake pads out of the bracket by hand. Use needle-nose pliers if needed.
  • Remove the pad abutment clips (the stainless “tracks” the pads slide on). These come out with your fingers or a flat blade screwdriver.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the two caliper bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive.
  • Set the bracket aside.
  • Torque spec on reassembly: Torque to 80 Nm (59 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the old rotor

  • If your rotors have retaining screws, remove them using a Phillips screwdriver #3.
  • Pull the rotor straight off. If it’s rust-stuck, tap the rotor “hat” area (center section) while pulling, and clean the hub face using a wire brush.
  • Spray the hub face lightly with brake cleaner spray and wipe clean.

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor using brake cleaner spray to remove shipping oil.
  • Install the rotor onto the hub. If retaining screws are used, reinstall them using a Phillips screwdriver #3 (snug only).

Step 7: Prep and reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Install new pad hardware clips onto the bracket.
  • Use silicone brake grease sparingly on the pad contact points where the pads slide on the clips. Keep grease off friction material.
  • Reinstall the bracket and tighten the two bolts using a 17mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive.
  • Torque spec: Torque to 80 Nm (59 ft-lbs)

Step 8: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place an old pad against the piston face, then use a C-clamp 6-inch to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing—remove excess fluid if it nears the top.

Step 9: Install new pads and reinstall the caliper

  • Install the new pads into the bracket.
  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the two slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and finish with a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive.
  • Torque spec: Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs)

Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall both front wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the Outback off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench 1/2-inch drive and 19mm lug nut socket.
  • Torque spec: Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pads against the rotors).
  • 🧪 Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 or DOT 4 if needed.
  • 🧪 With the engine running, test the brakes at low speed in a safe area.
  • 🧪 Pad bedding (recommended): do 6-8 medium stops from ~40 to 10 mph, with 30-60 seconds between stops. Don’t hold the pedal at a stop.
  • 🧪 Recheck lug nut torque after 50-100 miles using a torque wrench 1/2-inch drive.
