🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Ball Joint Replacement

Assumption: this is for the front suspension ball joints. On this platform, the job usually involves pressing the ball joint out/in or replacing the control arm assembly if the joint is not serviceable separately. The key is to support the suspension correctly and torque everything at normal ride height so the new joint does not bind.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the vehicle with jack stands on solid ground. Never work under a vehicle held up only by a jack.
  • Use wheel chocks on the rear wheels.
  • Keep hands clear of the spring and steering knuckle while separating the joint.
  • Do not let the brake hose or ABS wire hang by itself.
  • If the lower control arm must be lowered far, watch for spring tension.
  • Torque final fasteners with the suspension at ride height to avoid premature bushing wear.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)

  • 13mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Pickle fork or ball joint separator (specialty)
  • Ball joint press kit (specialty)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • If the ball joints are worn, plan on a front-end alignment after repair.
  • Spray the ball joint fasteners and taper area with penetrating oil and let it soak.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front end

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee at the proper jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Remove the front wheel with a 21mm socket.

Step 2: Expose the ball joint area

  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to remove any splash shields or brackets blocking access.
  • Clean the joint area with a wire brush.
  • Clean metal makes separation easier.

Step 3: Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle

  • Remove the cotter pin, if equipped, using pliers.
  • Use an 18mm socket or the correct size for the stud nut to remove the ball joint nut.
  • Use a pickle fork or ball joint separator (specialty) to break the taper free.
  • If needed, tap the knuckle lightly with a hammer while supporting the joint.

Step 4: Remove the ball joint from the control arm

  • If the ball joint is press-fit, use a ball joint press kit (specialty) to press it out of the control arm.
  • Keep the press square so the control arm is not damaged.
  • If the joint is not serviceable separately on your setup, remove the control arm and replace the complete arm assembly.

Step 5: Install the new ball joint

  • Use the ball joint press kit (specialty) to press the new joint in straight.
  • Seat it fully against the control arm stop.
  • Install the new nut finger-tight.
  • Torque to the factory specification for the ball joint nut and press hardware.

Step 6: Reconnect the steering knuckle

  • Raise or lower the knuckle with a floor jack or pry bar until the stud lines up.
  • Install the ball joint nut with an 18mm socket.
  • Install a new cotter pin if the design uses one.
  • Torque to the factory specification for the ball joint-to-knuckle fastener.

Step 7: Reassemble and torque at ride height

  • Reinstall any brackets or shields with the correct 13mm socket or 15mm socket.
  • Reinstall the wheel and snug the lug nuts with a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle so the suspension sits at normal ride height.
  • Final-torque any control arm or suspension fasteners to factory spec with a torque wrench.
  • Torque the wheel lug nuts to the factory wheel spec.

Step 8: Repeat on the other side if needed

  • Replace ball joints in pairs on the same axle.
  • Do the same procedure on the opposite front side.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock.
  • Check for clunks, looseness, or rubbing.
  • Inspect the ball joint area for correct seating and any torn dust boots.
  • Schedule a front-end alignment before regular driving.
  • Test drive slowly first, then recheck lug nut torque.
