🔧 Engine Mounts - Replacement

On your BRZ, the engine mounts hold the engine in place and keep vibration under control. Replacing them requires safely supporting the engine, unbolting each mount, and installing the new mounts without pinching hoses or wiring.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Never get under the car supported only by a jack; use jack stands.
  • 🛑 The engine must be supported before loosening mount hardware, or it can drop and damage parts.
  • 🧤 Keep hands clear between the engine and subframe while lifting/lowering.
  • 🔥 Let the exhaust/catalyst area cool fully before working nearby.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is recommended if you’ll move wiring near the starter/alternator area (negative terminal first).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Socket set (8mm-19mm)
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • Breaker bar (1/2")
  • Torque wrench (10-200 Nm range)
  • Wrench set (10mm-19mm)
  • Extensions (3" and 6")
  • Universal joint adapter
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Engine support bar (specialty)
  • Wood block (2x4)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Left engine mount - Qty: 1
  • Right engine mount - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, put the car in gear, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Raise the front and support it securely on jack stands at the proper front lift points.
  • If using a jack to support the engine: place a wood block (2x4) on the jack pad to spread the load on the oil pan area. Do not jack metal-to-metal.
  • If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm what you’re replacing (needed for exact steps + torque specs)

  • Reply with: (1) Are you replacing both engine mounts only, or also the transmission mount?
  • Reply with: (2) Will you support the engine with an engine support bar (specialty) from above, or a floor jack + wood block from below?
  • Once I have those 2 details, I’ll give you the exact mount-by-mount bolt access points and the correct Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs) values for each fastener on your BRZ.

Step 2: (Preview) Safely support the engine

  • If using an engine support bar (specialty): position it across the strut towers and take up slack on the lift chain until the engine weight is supported.
  • If using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum): lift gently under the engine with the wood block (2x4) in place until you see the engine just start to “float.”

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and check for abnormal vibration, clunks, or contact between the engine and surrounding parts.
  • With the hood open, lightly blip the throttle and watch for excessive engine movement.
  • Test drive at low speed first; recheck for any new noises.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $600-$1,200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $180-$450 (parts only)

You Save: $420-$750 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 3-5 hours.
