🔧 MDX - Engine Mount Replacement

Your MDX uses multiple mounts to hold the engine/transmission in place and control vibration. The exact removal steps (and torque specs) depend on which mount(s) you’re replacing because access, brackets, and support points differ by position.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack; use jack stands on solid lift points.
  • ⚠️ The engine must be supported before a mount is unbolted; an unsupported engine can shift suddenly.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear of pinch points while raising/lowering the engine.
  • ⚠️ If you’ll be near the radiator fans, disconnect the battery; fans can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Do not jack directly on the oil pan without a load spreader; you can crack/dent it.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 1/2" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Socket set (8mm-19mm)
  • Wrench set (10mm-19mm)
  • Breaker bar (1/2" drive)
  • Torque wrench (10-200 ft-lbs range)
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Engine support bar (specialty)
  • Wood block (2x6, 12"-18" long)
  • Penetrating oil

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine mount (right/passenger side) - Qty: 1
  • Transmission mount (left/driver side) - Qty: 1
  • Front mount (front lower mount) - Qty: 1
  • Rear mount (rear lower mount) - Qty: 1
  • New mount nuts/bolts (if required) - Qty: As needed

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool fully; mounts sit near hot exhaust parts.
  • If you’ll remove the upper mount(s), plan engine support: an engine support bar holds the engine from above (safer for this job).
  • Answer these two questions so I can give the exact OEM-correct steps and torque specs:
  • âť“ Which mount(s) are you replacing: right (passenger), left (driver/trans), front lower, rear lower, or all four?
  • âť“ Do you have an engine support bar (specialty), or only a floor jack + wood block?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the mount plan (required)

  • Reply with which mount(s) you’re doing and what you’ll use to support the engine.
  • Once I have that, I’ll give the exact access steps (covers/air box/subframe shields), the correct support point, and the torque specs for your MDX.

Step 2: Do not unbolt mounts yet

  • Until the engine is properly supported, do not loosen any mount-to-body or mount-to-bracket hardware.
  • Mount jobs go safest with a support bar.

âś… After Repair

  • After installation, you’ll verify engine height/alignment, check for vibration on idle, and do a short road test for clunks on accel/brake.
  • If any mount bolts were loosened with the engine “twisted,” you may need to re-center and re-torque to prevent pre-loading the mounts.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $600-$1,800 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $150-$700 (parts only)

You Save: $450-$1,100 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-6 hours.
