šŸ”§ CX-5 - Engine Mount Replacement

On your CX-5, the engine is held in place by multiple mounts (right/passenger-side engine mount, left/driver-side transmission mount, and a rear mount). Replacing a mount is very doable DIY, but the exact steps and torque specs change depending on which mount you’re doing.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-4.0 hours (per mount)

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Never get under the CX-5 supported only by a jack—use jack stands.
  • āš ļø The engine must be supported before any mount bolts come out (otherwise it can drop/shift).
  • āš ļø Keep hands clear between the engine and body while jacking/supporting.
  • āš ļø Let the exhaust/catalyst cool fully before working near the rear mount area.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is typically not required, but keep tools away from the positive terminal.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Socket set 8mm-19mm
  • Ratchet 3/8"
  • Breaker bar 1/2"
  • Torque wrench 10-200 Nm range
  • Extensions 3" and 6"
  • Universal joint adapter
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Wood block 2x6
  • Engine support bar (specialty)
  • Work light

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Right-side engine mount (passenger-side) - Qty: 1
  • Left-side transmission mount (driver-side) - Qty: 1
  • Rear engine mount (torque mount) - Qty: 1
  • Replacement mount hardware kit (nuts/bolts) - Qty: 1 (if required)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Plan how you’ll support the engine:
    • Engine support bar = safest; it holds the engine from above.
    • Floor jack + wood block = supports from below; the wood spreads load on the oil pan.
  • Two quick questions so I give you the exact mount procedure + correct torque specs:
    • Which mount are you replacing: right (passenger) engine mount, left (driver) transmission mount, or rear mount?
    • Will you support the engine with an engine support bar or a floor jack + wood block?

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the CX-5

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the left and right front support points.
  • Give the CX-5 a firm push to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (undercover)

  • Use a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver to remove clips/screws.
  • Use a socket set 8mm-19mm with a ratchet 3/8" to remove any bolts.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order. Lay bolts in a simple pattern.

Step 3: Support the engine

  • If using an engine support bar (specialty), install it across the strut towers and tension it to hold the engine weight (follow the support bar’s instructions).
  • If using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum):
    • Place the wood block 2x6 on the jack pad.
    • Jack up gently under the oil pan area just until you see the engine weight is supported (do not lift the vehicle off the stands).

Step 4: Remove the mount (mount-specific)

  • Once you tell me which mount (right/left/rear), I’ll give the exact bolt locations, access steps (air box/battery tray, brackets, etc.), and the correct sequence.
  • Use a socket set 8mm-19mm, extensions 3" and 6", and a universal joint adapter as needed for tight access.
  • Break tight bolts loose with a breaker bar 1/2" (controlled force).

Step 5: Install the new mount and align the engine

  • Start all mount bolts by hand using a socket set 8mm-19mm and ratchet 3/8" (prevents cross-threading).
  • Adjust engine height slightly with the floor jack or engine support bar until the bolts thread in smoothly. If it binds, adjust height.
  • Tighten using a torque wrench 10-200 Nm range to the correct factory specs.
  • Torque to OEM spec (I’ll provide the exact Nm/ft-lbs once you confirm which mount).

Step 6: Reinstall shields and lower the CX-5

  • Reinstall the splash shield using a trim clip removal tool, Phillips screwdriver, and socket set 8mm-19mm.
  • Lower the CX-5 off the stands using the floor jack.
  • Remove wheel chocks.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle; listen for clunks or vibration changes.
  • With the hood open, lightly blip the throttle and watch for excessive engine rocking (a little movement is normal).
  • Test drive around the block and recheck for any new noises on acceleration/deceleration.
  • Recheck mount fasteners with a torque wrench 10-200 Nm range after a short drive if the service info calls for it.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $350-$1,100 (parts + labor, depends which mount)

DIY Cost: $80-$350 (parts only, depends which mount)

You Save: $270-$750 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.5-4.0 hours.
