🔧 4Runner - Tail/Stop (Taillight) Bulb Replacement (Left & Right)

You’ll remove each rear taillamp housing, swap the bulb(s), then reinstall the housing. This restores proper rear lighting so other drivers can see you and you stay road-legal.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: your 4Runner uses replaceable tail/stop bulbs (common 7443 type). If your tail lamps are LED and no bulb socket exists, the lamp is not bulb-serviceable and the entire taillamp assembly must be replaced.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working on exterior lights.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch new glass bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the taillamp when it pops loose so it doesn’t scratch paint.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Tail/stop light bulb (typically 7443) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the rear liftgate and keep it fully supported.
  • Set your flashlight nearby so you can see inside the lamp pocket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillamp fasteners (one side)

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Locate the small interior access cover next to the taillamp (inside the cargo opening).
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop the cover off. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps prevent scratches.)

Step 2: Remove the taillamp housing

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the two 10mm nuts holding the taillamp.
  • Hold the taillamp with your other hand as you finish removing the nuts.
  • Pull the taillamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins/clips.
  • Wiggle gently—don’t pry on painted edges.

Step 3: Remove the tail/stop bulb socket

  • Identify the tail/stop socket (commonly the larger dual-filament bulb socket).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the taillamp.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for better grip.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
  • Don’t touch the bulb glass.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and taillamp

  • Reinsert the bulb socket into the taillamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Line up the taillamp’s alignment pins with the body holes.
  • Press the taillamp straight forward until it seats flush.
  • Install the two 10mm nuts using a 10mm socket and ratchet: Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs).
  • Snap the interior access cover back in using hand pressure.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the opposite taillamp so both sides match in brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON (engine not required) and switch on the parking lights to confirm both taillights illuminate.
  • Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) to confirm both brake lights are bright.
  • Verify the taillamps sit flush and don’t wiggle.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove it and re-seat the bulb and socket fully.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
