๐Ÿ”ง Rogue - Taillight Bulb Replacement

Youโ€™ll be removing the rear light housings, changing the bulbs, and reinstalling everything so your tail and brake lights work properly on both sides. This is mostly trim and light work, with careful handling of plastic parts.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5โ€“1 hour

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • โš ๏ธ Park the Rogue on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • โš ๏ธ Turn the ignition off and switch all exterior lights off before starting.
  • โš ๏ธ Do not touch glass bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • โš ๏ธ Be gentle with plastic trim and the taillight housing to avoid cracks.
  • โš ๏ธ If you open and close the liftgate while working, keep fingers clear of hinges and latches.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ 10mm socket
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ 1/4" drive ratchet
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ 1/4" drive extension (3โ€“6")
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Flat trim removal tool (plastic)
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Needle-nose pliers
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Clean gloves (nitrile or latex)
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Clean shop towel or microfiber cloth
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Work light or flashlight
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Torque wrench (inch-lb or low-range ft-lb)
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Safety glasses

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • ๐Ÿ’ก Outer taillight bulb (tail/parking light, 7443 type) - Qty: 2
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Outer taillight bulb (turn signal, amber, 7440 type) - Qty: 2
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Outer taillight bulb (reverse light, 921 type) - Qty: 2
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Dielectric grease for bulb contacts - Qty: 1 small tube
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Replacement plastic push clips (rear side trim, optional) - Qty: 4โ€“6

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Park the Rogue on level ground with enough space to walk behind it.
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Open the liftgate to access the side trim near each taillight.
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Remove all cargo from the rear area so you can fold back trim easily.
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ You do not need to disconnect the battery for this job, but keep the ignition off.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the inside of the rear quarter panels

  • Open the liftgate fully.
  • On the left side, find the small interior trim panel or fabric liner directly behind the taillight area.
  • Use the flat trim removal tool to gently pop out any small plastic covers or clips holding the trim near the taillight.
  • Peel the trim or liner back just enough so you can see the back of the taillight housing and the two metal studs with 10mm nuts.
  • Repeat on the right side so both taillight backs are visible.

Step 2: Remove the taillight mounting nuts

  • Put on your gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use the 10mm socket with the ratchet and extension to loosen and remove the two 10mm nuts securing the left taillight to the body.
  • Keep the nuts in a safe place; do not drop them inside the body cavity.
  • Torque on reassembly will be 5โ€“7 Nm (44โ€“62 in-lbs).
  • Repeat for the right taillight so both sides are free from inside.

Step 3: Remove the outer taillight housings

  • Move to the outside of the Rogue, standing behind the left taillight.
  • Support the taillight with one hand.
  • With your other hand, gently pull the taillight straight rearward. It is held by plastic alignment pins that pop out of rubber grommets.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle it slightly side-to-side while pulling rearward. Do not pry hard with metal tools.
  • Once free, pull the housing out just enough to reach the bulb sockets and wiring harness.
  • Repeat for the right taillight housing.

Step 4: Disconnect the wiring harness (if needed)

  • You can leave the housing connected and just twist out bulb sockets, or disconnect fully for more room.
  • To disconnect: press the tab on the main electrical connector with your thumb and pull the plug straight out from the taillight. Use needle-nose pliers gently if the tab is stiff.
  • Set the taillight housing on a soft shop towel to avoid scratching the lens.

Step 5: Identify each bulb and remove it

  • On the back of the housing youโ€™ll see multiple round bulb sockets.
  • Tail/parking and brake bulb (dual-filament 7443) is usually the larger socket closer to the center of the vehicle.
  • Turn signal bulb (amber 7440) is usually the socket toward the outer edge or upper area.
  • Reverse bulb (921) is usually the smaller clear bulb lower in the housing.
  • Grasp a socket, then twist it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, and pull it out.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out from the socket. If tight, use gloves and wiggle gently.

Step 6: Install the new bulbs

  • Check that your new bulbs match the old ones by base type and size.
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the bulb base contacts if you have it. This helps prevent corrosion.
  • Wearing clean gloves, push each new bulb straight into its socket until it seats firmly.
  • Insert the socket back into the taillight housing opening, align the tabs, then twist it clockwise about 1/4 turn to lock.
  • Repeat for each bulb you are replacing (tail, turn, reverse) on the left side, then do the same on the right side.

Step 7: Test the bulbs before reassembly

  • Reconnect the electrical connector to each taillight if you unplugged it. Push until it clicks.
  • Carefully let the housings hang or support them with one hand; do not let them dangle by the wires.
  • Close the liftgate enough that the lights are visible but not latched if needed.
  • Have a helper sit in the driver seat, or use a heavy object on the brake pedal:
    • Turn the ignition to ON (engine can be off).
    • Switch on the parking lights to check tail/parking bulbs.
    • Press the brake pedal to check brake function on the same bulbs.
    • Use the turn signals and hazard lights to check turn bulbs.
    • Shift to Reverse (with brake firmly applied and wheels chocked if needed) to check reverse bulbs, or wait until reassembled and test in a safe spot.
  • If any bulb doesnโ€™t light, turn ignition off, recheck that the bulb is fully seated and socket is firmly locked and plugged in.

Step 8: Reinstall the taillight housings

  • With the ignition off again, position the left taillight housing back into the body opening.
  • Align the plastic guide pins on the housing with the rubber grommets in the body.
  • Push the housing straight forward toward the front of the Rogue until it snaps into place and sits flush with the body.
  • Go inside the cargo area, reinstall the two 10mm nuts by hand on the studs.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to snug them evenly.
  • Then use the torque wrench with the 10mm socket to tighten each nut to 5โ€“7 Nm (44โ€“62 in-lbs). Do not overtighten; studs can strip.
  • Repeat this process for the right taillight housing.

Step 9: Reinstall interior trim

  • Fold the interior trim or fabric liner back into its original position on the left side.
  • Press any plastic clips back into their holes by hand until they click. Replace broken clips with new ones.
  • Reinstall any small covers you removed using the flat trim removal tool to guide them in if needed.
  • Repeat on the right side.

โœ… After Repair

  • ๐Ÿ” Walk around the rear of the Rogue and visually confirm all rear lights: tail/parking, brake, turn signals, and reverse lights (check reverse in a safe area with the brake firmly applied).
  • ๐Ÿ” Make sure both taillight housings sit evenly with the body and there are no gaps.
  • ๐Ÿ” Listen for any rattles when closing the liftgate; recheck clips if you hear any.
  • ๐Ÿ” Stow your tools and put cargo back into the rear area.

๐Ÿ’ฐ DIY vs Shop Cost
