🔧 Highlander - Taillight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both rear taillight bulbs on your Highlander is a beginner-friendly repair. The rear lamp assemblies are removed from the outside of the body, then the bulb sockets twist out from the back of each lamp.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on; bulbs can get hot.
- 🧤 Wear gloves. Skin oil can shorten bulb life if it gets on the glass.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb replacement.
- 💡 Do not force the lamp assembly. The rear locating pins can crack if pulled at an angle.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4-inch ratchet
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Clean nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Microfiber towel

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Highlander on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn all exterior lights off.
- Open the liftgate fully so you can reach the inner edge of each taillight assembly.
- A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps release panels or lamp clips without scratching paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate
- Open the liftgate and stand behind the Highlander.
- Look at the inner edge of the taillight assembly, next to the liftgate opening.
- You will see the mounting bolts that hold the lamp to the body.
Step 2: Remove the Taillight Bolts
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the taillight mounting bolts.
- Place the bolts somewhere safe so they do not fall into the liftgate opening.
- Tip: Use a towel below the lamp.
Step 3: Release the Taillight Assembly
- Hold the taillight assembly with both hands.
- Pull it straight rearward, away from the vehicle.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool carefully between the lamp and body to help release the locating pins.
- Do not twist the lamp sideways. Pulling straight back protects the guide pins.
Step 4: Find the Taillight Bulb Socket
- Look at the back of the taillight assembly.
- The taillight / stoplight bulb socket is the socket for the red rear running light and brake light.
- A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp housing.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use your hand to turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- Wear clean nitrile gloves, then pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling straight out.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Push the new 7443 clear taillight / stoplight bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- Use a microfiber towel to wipe the bulb glass if it was touched.
- Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise until it locks.
Step 7: Reinstall the Taillight Assembly
- Line up the taillight locating pins with the holes in the body.
- Push the lamp straight forward until it sits flush with the body panel.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall the mounting bolts.
- Tighten the bolts evenly. Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Tip: Snug, not muscle-tight.
Step 8: Repeat on the Other Side
- Move to the opposite taillight assembly.
- Use the same 10mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and plastic trim removal tool.
- Repeat the removal, bulb replacement, and installation steps.
- Torque the opposite taillight bolts to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
Step 9: Test the Lights
- Turn the parking lights on and check that both taillights glow red.
- Press the brake pedal and check that both lights get brighter.
- If working alone, use a safe reflection, garage door, or have someone stand behind the vehicle.
✅ After Repair
- Make sure both taillight assemblies sit flush against the body.
- Check that no gap is visible around the lamp seals.
- Confirm the parking lights and brake lights both work on the left and right sides.
- If one bulb does not work, remove it and rotate it 180 degrees in the socket, then test again.
- No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required for this repair.
