🔧 Outback - Taillight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
On your Outback, the rear bulbs are serviced from inside the cargo area by removing the taillight assembly and swapping the bulb(s) in the sockets. You’ll do the same process on the left and right side, then test all rear light functions to confirm the correct bulb was replaced.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the car before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; hot glass can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the taillight as you remove it so it doesn’t scratch paint.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to both sides.
- Confirm which bulb you’re replacing by testing: parking lights, brake lights, and turn signals.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight mounting nuts (one side)
- Open the cargo area trim access cover behind the taillight using a trim removal tool (plastic).
- Use a flashlight to locate the two taillight retaining nuts on the studs.
Step 2: Remove the taillight assembly
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the two nuts.
- With one hand supporting the lamp, pull the taillight straight rearward to release the outer locating clip.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling straight back (don’t pry against painted metal).
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Find the bulb socket for the failed function (brake/tail/turn) and rotate the socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the housing.
- If the wiring connector must be unplugged for room, press the tab and pull straight apart by hand.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (or twist-and-pull if it’s a locking style).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- If using it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not the bulb glass).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and taillight
- Reinsert the socket into the taillight and twist clockwise until it locks by hand.
- Line up the locating pin/clip and push the taillight straight forward until it seats flush.
- Install the two nuts using a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
- Torque to 7.5 Nm (5.5 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall the interior access cover by hand.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-5 for the opposite taillight using the same tools.
✅ After Repair
- Turn on parking lights and verify both rear running lights work.
- Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and verify both brake lights are bright.
- Turn on hazards and confirm both rear turn signals flash correctly.
- Check the taillights sit flush with the body and no trim is pinched.
