🔧 Tiguan - Taillight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
You’ll access each taillight from inside the cargo area, remove the lamp assembly, then swap the bulb(s) in the bulb carrier. The key is to replace the correct bulb type—Volkswagen often uses different bulbs for turn, reverse, and parking functions.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can get hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching new bulb glass with bare fingers.
- ⚠️ Support the taillight as you pull it out so it doesn’t fall and crack.
- 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Clean shop towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Taillight bulb(s) (match the bulb number from the old bulb) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (small packet) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear hatch for access to the taillight mounting area.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool (a non-metal pry tool) to avoid scratching panels.
- Quick check: confirm which function is out (turn signal, reverse, brake, or tail). Replace bulbs in pairs if you want matching brightness/color.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Verify which bulb is out
- Turn the ignition on and operate the light you’re fixing (turn signal, reverse, etc.).
- Turn ignition back OFF before disassembly.
Step 2: Remove the inner access cover (each side)
- In the cargo area, locate the small access door/cover behind the taillight.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop the cover open.
- Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 3: Remove the taillight mounting fastener
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the taillight retaining nut/fastener inside the access opening.
- Set the fastener aside in a safe spot.
Step 4: Pull the taillight assembly out (outer body lamp)
- Stand behind the vehicle and place one hand on the taillight to support it.
- Gently pull the taillight straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it release—do not pry hard on the painted surface.
Step 5: Disconnect the wiring connector
- Press the connector lock tab with a small flat-blade screwdriver (if needed) and unplug the connector.
- Use a clean shop towel to support the lamp on the bumper so it doesn’t get scratched.
Step 6: Remove the bulb carrier/socket plate
- On the back of the taillight, locate the bulb carrier (the plastic piece the bulbs twist into).
- Release the carrier locks by hand; if tight, use the small flat-blade screwdriver gently on the tabs.
- Pull the carrier straight out.
Step 7: Replace the bulb(s)
- Identify the correct bulb by reading the bulb number printed on the metal base or plastic (for example, it will be stamped/printed on the bulb).
- Remove the old bulb:
- If it’s a twist-lock style, turn it by hand and pull it out.
- If it’s a push-in wedge style, pull it straight out.
- Install the new bulb fully seated in the same position.
- Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not the bulb glass).
- Don’t touch bulb glass with bare fingers.
Step 8: Test before reassembly
- Reconnect the taillight electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
- Turn ignition ON and test the light function.
- If it doesn’t work, remove the bulb and re-seat it, then re-check the connector lock.
Step 9: Reinstall the bulb carrier and taillight
- Reinstall the bulb carrier into the taillight housing by hand until all tabs fully lock.
- Plug in the connector (if you unplugged it again) and confirm it’s fully seated.
- Align the taillight locating pins with the body grommets and push the taillight straight in.
- Reinstall the inside fastener using the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet until snug.
- Snap the access cover back into place by hand.
Step 10: Repeat on the other side
- Perform the same steps on the opposite taillight.
- Do a final full light check (tail, brake, turn, reverse).
âś… After Repair
- Test all rear lights: tail lights, brake lights, both turn signals, and reverse lights.
- If you see a bulb-out warning on the dash after replacement, cycle ignition OFF then ON and re-check the bulb seating.
- Make sure both taillights sit flush with the body and there are no gaps.

- Which function is out: turn signal, reverse, brake, or tail/parking?
- Is the light that’s out on the outer body taillight, or the small lamp on the hatch (liftgate)?
