šŸ”§ 2500 - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove each taillight housing, twist out the bulb sockets, and swap the bulbs. This is a straightforward job, but the exact bulb types can vary depending on whether your 2500 has standard incandescent bulbs or factory LED taillamps.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Quick question (so I can list the exact bulbs): Do you have factory LED taillights, or the standard bulb-type taillights? Also, which bulbs are you replacing: brake/turn, reverse, and/or parking/marker?

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the truck off and set the parking brake before starting.
  • āš ļø Let bulbs cool before touching them (they can get hot).
  • āš ļø Don’t force the taillight housing—pull straight back to avoid breaking the alignment pins.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Stop/Turn/Tail bulb - Qty: 2
  • Reverse bulb - Qty: 2
  • Side marker/parking bulb (if equipped in housing) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the tailgate for easier access to the taillight screws.
  • Tip: Do one side at a time.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access

  • Lower the tailgate by hand so you can reach the inner edge of the taillights.
  • Use flashlight to locate the two taillight retaining screws on the inboard side of the housing.

Step 2: Remove the taillight housing

  • Use a Torx T25 screwdriver to remove the two screws.
  • Pull the taillight housing straight rearward (toward you). If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim tool to gently help it start moving.
  • Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) when reinstalling the screws.

Step 3: Remove the bulb sockets

  • Behind the housing, find the bulb socket(s) and turn each socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the housing.
  • Tip: Don’t twist the wires.

Step 4: Replace the bulbs

  • Put on nitrile gloves (helps keep oils off bulbs and improves grip).
  • Remove the old bulb from the socket:
    • If it’s a push-in style: pull it straight out by hand.
    • If it’s a twist-lock style: push in lightly and turn to release.
  • Install the new bulb fully into the socket (press in until it seats).
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (a thin film is enough).

Step 5: Reinstall sockets and housing

  • Insert each socket back into the housing and turn clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Line up the housing alignment pins with the bed-side holes, then push the taillight straight forward until it seats.
  • Reinstall the two screws using the Torx T25 screwdriver and Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other taillight.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition on and test: tail/parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
  • If a new bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb, then re-check.
  • Make sure both housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$60 (parts only)

You Save: $70-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
