🔧 Sentra - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You can replace the rear bulbs from inside the trunk by removing small trim access panels and (for the outer lamps) loosening the taillamp assembly. The main goal is to swap the failed bulb(s) without damaging the lamp housing or bending the alignment pins.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they get very hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the taillamp so it doesn’t drop and crack.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension (1/4" drive)
  • Plastic trim removal tool set (specialty)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/brake bulb (outer taillamp, match the bulb number on your old bulb) - Qty: 2
  • Rear turn signal bulb (outer taillamp, match the bulb number on your old bulb) - Qty: 2
  • Rear reverse bulb (trunk lid lamp, match the bulb number on your old bulb) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the trunk.
  • Remove any trunk cargo/floor mat so you can access the side trim.
  • Have your replacement bulbs ready; match the printed number on the old bulb.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which rear bulb(s) you’re replacing

  • Have a helper press the brake, turn signals on, and shift to reverse (engine on, foot on brake) to confirm what’s out.
  • Use a flashlight to look at each lamp section.
  • If only one side is out, replace both.

Step 2: Access the outer taillamp area (left or right)

  • In the trunk, locate the trim access cover behind the taillamp.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set (specialty) to pop the cover open. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without scratching.)

Step 3: Remove the outer taillamp assembly (recommended for easiest bulb access)

  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension (1/4" drive), and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the taillamp retaining nuts inside the trunk.
  • Support the lamp with your free hand as the last nut comes off.
  • Gently pull the taillamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—do not pry on the painted body edge.

Step 4: Remove and replace the bulb(s) in the outer taillamp

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (or twist if it’s a twist-lock style).
  • Wear nitrile gloves and install the new bulb (match the old bulb number exactly).
  • Reinstall the socket and twist clockwise until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the outer taillamp and tighten nuts

  • Line up the alignment pins and press the lamp straight into place.
  • Start the nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension (1/4" drive), and 1/4" drive ratchet to tighten the nuts: Torque to 5.5 Nm (49 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the trunk trim access cover by pressing it back in place.

Step 6: Replace bulbs on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2–5 for the opposite taillamp.

Step 7: If your reverse bulbs are in the trunk lid, replace those too (if needed)

  • Open the trunk lid and locate the access panel behind the trunk-lid lamp.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set (specialty) to open the panel.
  • Twist the reverse bulb socket counterclockwise by hand, remove the bulb, and install the new one using nitrile gloves.
  • Reinstall the socket and close the access panel.

âś… After Repair

  • Test tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
  • Make sure both outer taillamps sit flush and even with the body lines.
  • If a bulb still doesn’t work, re-check the socket seating and connector fit.
