🔧 Pathfinder - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Pathfinder, each rear lamp housing is removed from the outside after you remove two nuts from inside the liftgate area. Once the housing is out, you twist the bulb socket out and swap the bulb.
Quick check (so you buy the right bulbs): Which bulbs are you replacing—tail/parking, brake/stop, turn signal, or reverse? Also, when you look inside the lamp, do you see a removable bulb socket, or does it appear to be a sealed LED unit?
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and the light switch OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching them.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of halogen bulbs with bare fingers (skin oils shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the lamp as you remove it to avoid scratching paint.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4" drive)
- Trim panel removal tool
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean shop towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear lamp bulb (correct position/type for your socket) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to P.
- Open the liftgate for access to the rear lamp mounting nuts.
- Lay a clean shop towel on the bumper edge below the lamp to protect paint if the lamp slips.
- Take a photo before unplugging anything.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight mounting nuts
- Open the liftgate.
- Use a flashlight to locate the rear of the taillight area (inside the body, near the lamp).
- If your Pathfinder has a small interior access cover, use a trim panel removal tool to carefully pop it open. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that lifts clips without damage.)
Step 2: Remove the taillight housing
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and extension to remove the two mounting nuts for that taillight.
- Hold the lamp with your other hand as the last nut comes off.
- From the outside, pull the taillight straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Pull straight back—don’t twist.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Find the bulb socket for the function you’re replacing (tail/stop/turn/reverse) at the back of the housing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- If it’s tight, put on nitrile gloves for grip and use a clean shop towel to help you turn it.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some types require a small twist first—match what the old bulb does).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- If the bulb is halogen, use nitrile gloves or a clean shop towel to avoid touching the glass.
- Optional: Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 5: Test before reassembly
- Reinstall the socket into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Turn the ignition to ON and test the light function:
- Tail/parking: switch to parking lights.
- Brake: press brake pedal (helper needed).
- Turn: activate turn signal.
- Reverse: foot on brake, shift to R (helper and safe area).
Step 6: Reinstall the taillight housing
- Align the lamp’s guide pins with the body grommets and push the lamp straight in by hand.
- Install the nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to tighten the nuts snug.
- Snug only—plastic studs can crack.
Step 7: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–6 on the other taillight so both sides match in brightness and color.
âś… After Repair
- Verify all rear lighting works: tail, brake, both turn signals, hazards, and reverse.
- Make sure the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.
- If a new bulb doesn’t work, re-check that the socket is fully locked and the bulb is fully seated.
