🔧 Altima - Taillight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both rear taillight bulbs on your Altima is a beginner-friendly job. You’ll access the rear lamp housings from inside the trunk, remove the bulb sockets, replace the bulbs, and test the lights before closing everything back up.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off before removing any bulb.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool for a few minutes if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves or use a clean cloth when handling bulbs. Oil from your fingers can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb replacement.
- ⚠️ Do not force the trunk trim panels. The clips can crack if pulled at an angle.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Altima on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
- Open the trunk fully and remove any cargo near the left and right rear corners.
- A trim clip removal tool is a flat pry tool that helps remove plastic clips without tearing the trunk liner.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Trunk and Locate the Rear Lamp Access Area
- Use the trunk release to open the trunk.
- Use a flashlight to look at the trunk liner directly behind each taillight assembly.
- You will work from inside the trunk, near the left and right rear corners.
- Good light makes this much easier.
Step 2: Move the Trunk Liner Aside
- Use the trim clip removal tool to gently remove the plastic trunk liner clips near the taillight area.
- If a clip is stubborn, use needle-nose pliers to pull the center pin or clip body straight out.
- Fold the trunk liner inward just enough to reach the bulb sockets.
- Do not crease the liner sharply. It only needs to move enough to give your hand access.
Step 3: Identify the Taillight Bulb Socket
- Use the flashlight to find the bulb sockets on the rear of the lamp housing.
- The taillight bulb socket is the socket for the rear running light in the outer taillight housing.
- A bulb socket is the plastic holder that twists into the lamp housing and holds the bulb.
- Do not pull on the wiring. Hold the socket body instead.
Step 4: Remove the First Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to grip the taillight bulb socket.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- If it is tight, wiggle it gently while pulling straight back.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Wear clean nitrile gloves before touching the bulb.
- Use your gloved fingers to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is stuck, use a clean cloth for grip and pull straight out.
- Do not crush the glass bulb.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use clean nitrile gloves to handle the new rear taillight bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Make sure the bulb sits squarely and does not wobble.
- Clean bulbs last longer.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
- Line up the tabs on the socket with the slots in the housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
- There is no torque spec for this socket. Tighten by hand only.
Step 8: Replace the Bulb on the Other Side
- Move to the opposite rear corner of the trunk.
- Use the trim clip removal tool to move the trunk liner aside if needed.
- Use your hand to turn the second taillight bulb socket counterclockwise and remove it.
- Use clean nitrile gloves to pull the old bulb out and push the new bulb in.
- Use your hand to reinstall the socket and turn it clockwise until locked.
Step 9: Test Both Taillights
- Turn the headlight switch to the parking light or headlight position.
- Walk to the rear of your Altima and confirm both taillights are lit.
- If one side does not light, turn the lights off and use your hand to make sure the bulb is fully seated in the socket.
- If the bulb still does not work, check that the socket is locked into the housing and the bulb contacts are clean.
Step 10: Reinstall the Trunk Liner
- Turn the exterior lights back off.
- Fold the trunk liner back into place by hand.
- Use your fingers to press the plastic clips back into their holes.
- If a clip has a center pin, use your fingers to push the body in first, then press the center pin flush.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the parking lights on again and verify both rear taillights glow evenly.
- Press the brake pedal and confirm the brake lights still work.
- Turn on the hazard lights and confirm the rear turn signals still work.
- Close the trunk and make sure no liner is pinched near the trunk seal.
- No scan tool reset is required for this repair.
