🔧 Sorento - Taillight Bulb Replacement (Left & Right)

You’ll access the rear lamp bulb sockets from inside the cargo area, remove the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything. This is usually quick, but some Sorento taillamps are LED (no replaceable “bulb” for that function), so I’ll show you how to confirm as you go.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch a new halogen bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If you find an LED module (no removable bulb), don’t force it—tell me which light is out and we’ll switch to the correct repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulb (match the old bulb exactly) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the liftgate.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Decide which function you’re replacing on both sides (brake/tail, turn signal, or reverse). If you’re not sure, have a helper press the brake and use the turn signal while you watch.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillamp service cover

  • Open the liftgate and look at the carpeted side trim in the cargo area behind each taillamp.
  • Use a flashlight to find the small access door/cover in the trim (if equipped).
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop the access cover open. Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket for the failed light

  • Look for the round bulb socket(s) going into the back of the taillamp.
  • With nitrile gloves on, grip the socket and turn it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand, then pull it straight out.
  • If it won’t turn easily, re-grip and try again—don’t use pliers (they can crack the socket/housing).

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (most are a simple pull-out style).
  • Use a flashlight and compare the old bulb base to your new bulb so you install the exact match.
  • If you don’t see a removable bulb and instead see a sealed LED unit or circuit board, stop and tell me which light function is out.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Install the new bulb into the socket using nitrile gloves.
  • Make sure it seats fully and straight.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and repeat on the other side

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing, then turn clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks by hand.
  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other taillamp so both sides match.
  • Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back in place by hand.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the lights on and verify the repaired function works on both sides.
  • Check brake lights with a helper (or back up near a wall/garage door to see reflections).
  • If the new bulb still doesn’t light, the next checks are the socket fit, fuse, and ground—tell me which function and which side.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Quick check so I can be 100% accurate:

  • Which lights are you replacing on both sides: tail/brake, turn signal, or reverse?
  • When you remove the socket, do you see a normal removable bulb, or does it look like a sealed LED module?
