🔧 Focus - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll access the rear lamp assemblies from inside the trunk, remove each taillight housing, then swap the bulbs from the back side. Replacing both sides at the same time keeps brightness and color matched.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first—taillight bulbs can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the taillight as you pull it out so you don’t scratch paint.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight/brake bulb (dual-filament) - Qty: 2

Tip: Match the bulb number printed on your old bulb.

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the trunk.
  • Have a towel ready to set the taillight on (prevents scratches).
  • Confirm which function you’re replacing: tail/brake vs turn vs reverse. If you want, tell me which light is out and I’ll list the exact bulb(s) to buy.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the taillight fasteners

  • Open the trunk and locate the trunk side trim behind each taillight.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop the trim access cover/edge back enough to reach the taillight retaining nuts.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver carefully to start it, then finish with the trim tool.

Step 2: Remove the taillight assembly (one side at a time)

  • Remove the retaining nuts using an 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension.
  • With one hand supporting the lamp outside, pull the taillight straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
  • Set the taillight on a towel.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • On the back of the taillight, find the socket for the tail/brake bulb.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • Socket = the plastic holder the bulb locks into.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wear nitrile gloves).
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If the bulb is glass, avoid touching the glass with bare fingers.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and taillight

  • Reinsert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise to lock by hand.
  • Position the taillight back into the body, aligning the guide pins.
  • Install the retaining nuts using the 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then Torque to 2 Nm (1.5 ft-lbs).
  • Reposition the trunk trim/access cover and press clips back in by hand.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the opposite taillight.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the key ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, and turn signals.
  • If the bulb doesn’t work, remove it and rotate/reseat it, then recheck.
  • Make sure the taillight sits flush with the body and the trunk trim is secure.
