🔧 Tahoe - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Tahoe, the taillamp assembly comes off from the outside after you open the liftgate. Once the lamp is loose, you twist the bulb sockets out, swap the bulbs, and reinstall the lamp.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves—bulbs can be hot, and oils from fingers can shorten bulb life.
  • đź‘“ Use safety glasses when pulling the lamp loose (it can pop free suddenly).
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T15 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean rag

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight bulb(s) (match by function: turn/brake/reverse) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate to access the taillamp screws.
  • If a bulb was recently on, let it cool for 5-10 minutes.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulbs you’re replacing

  • Turn the lights on briefly to confirm which side(s) and which function is out (park light, brake light, turn signal, or reverse).
  • Turn everything back off and remove the key.
  • Tip: Use a wall reflection to see signals.

Step 2: Remove the taillamp screws

  • Open the liftgate.
  • On one taillamp, use a Torx T15 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inboard edge (the edge closest to the liftgate opening).
  • Set screws aside so they don’t fall into the bumper area.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

Step 3: Pull the taillamp assembly straight back

  • Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you). Do not pry hard outward toward the side of the truck.
  • If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving at the inboard edge.
  • The lamp is held by alignment pins (plastic pegs) that pop out of rubber grommets.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)

  • Locate the bulb socket(s) on the back of the taillamp.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter-turn, then pull it straight out.
  • Tip: Turn gently—don’t force the socket.

Step 5: Replace the bulb(s)

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some take a firm tug).
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • If you have it, wipe the bulb with a clean rag and use nitrile gloves to keep oils off the glass.
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).

Step 6: Reinstall sockets and refit the taillamp

  • Insert each socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Line up the lamp’s alignment pins with the body grommets, then push straight forward until it seats flush.
  • Reinstall the two screws using the Torx T15 screwdriver and Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Perform the same steps for the other taillamp assembly.

âś… After Repair

  • Test park lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
  • Verify the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.
  • If a new bulb still doesn’t work, swap left/right bulbs to confirm it’s not a socket or wiring issue.
