🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Replacement
This job replaces both rear taillight bulbs on your Equinox. On this vehicle, the bulb sockets are typically accessed from inside the cargo area, so you do not need to remove the whole lamp assembly unless the lamp is LED-only. If your rear lamps are not lighting at all, this is the first thing to check before replacing the entire housing.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Let the bulbs cool before touching them. Hot bulbs can burn your fingers.
- Use care around plastic trim so the clips do not break.
- Do not touch the glass of a new halogen bulb with bare hands; oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

Step 1: Access the rear lamp service area
- Open the liftgate.

- Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket
- Locate the bulb socket on the back of the taillight housing.
- Use your hand to turn the socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out.
- If it is tight, use a small flat-blade screwdriver carefully to help release the tab, but do not force it.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pressing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Make sure the bulb is locked in straight and not crooked.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket
- Line up the socket with the housing.
- Use your hand to turn it clockwise until it locks in place.
- Do not overtighten.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side

- Replace both bulbs together so the light output matches side to side.
Step 6: Reinstall the trim cover
- Use your hands to press the cargo trim access cover back into place.
- Make sure all clips are fully seated.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and test both taillights.
