🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Assumption: This covers the left and right rear taillight bulbs in the outer lamp housings. If your RAV4 has LED rear lamps, the bulbs are not serviceable and the lamp assembly must be replaced instead.

Replacing both rear bulbs is a simple job once you access the lamp from inside the cargo area. The key is to remove the trim carefully, swap the bulbs with the correct match, and reinstall the housings without pinching the gasket.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Let the bulbs cool before touching the housing; bulbs can get hot.
  • Use care with plastic trim clips; they can break easily.
  • Do not touch a new halogen bulb glass with bare fingers. Oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel removal tool (specialty)
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulb set - Left and right, matched to your existing bulb type - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear liftgate.
  • Fold the cargo floor up or remove loose cargo for better access.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the cargo access area

  • Open the liftgate and locate the rear lamp access points inside the cargo area.
  • Remove any cargo cover or floor panel if needed for room.
  • Keep screws and clips in a small tray.

Step 2: Remove the rear trim fasteners

  • Use a trim panel removal tool to gently pry out the cargo side trim clips or covers blocking the lamp access.
  • If a fastener uses a bolt, use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet with the short extension to remove it.
  • Pull the trim back just enough to reach the bulb socket.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • If the socket is tight, wiggle it gently. Do not force it.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new bulb of the same type.
  • Match the bulb base before pushing it in.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Twist it clockwise until it locks.
  • Make sure the seal sits flat and the socket is fully seated.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same steps for the other taillight bulb.
  • Use the same tools and installation method.

Step 7: Reinstall the trim

  • Reinstall any bolts with the 10mm socket and tighten them snugly.
  • Reinstall the trim clips by hand until they click into place.
  • Make sure no wiring is pinched behind the panel.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights and confirm both rear lamps work.
  • Press the brake pedal and verify both brake lights illuminate.
  • Check the turn signals and hazards if those bulbs were also serviced.
  • Walk around the vehicle and confirm both sides match in brightness.
