🔧 Taillight Bulb Replacement - Rear Lamp Bulb Swap

The rear taillight bulbs are replaced from inside the trunk by removing the access covers behind each lamp. On your Corolla, this is a simple job and usually takes less than an hour if both sides are being done.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off before starting so the bulbs are not hot.
  • Do not touch the glass part of a new bulb with bare fingers.
  • If a bulb is stuck, do not force the socket; twist it gently.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Work slowly to avoid cracking the lamp housing.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo near the rear lamp area.
  • Make sure the headlight switch is off.
  • Keep the old bulb until the new one is installed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and access the rear lamp area

  • Open the trunk fully.
  • Use your hand to pull back the carpeted side trim near the taillight on one side.
  • If needed, use a trim panel tool to gently release any push clips.

Step 2: Remove the bulb access cover

  • Find the round or rectangular service cover behind the taillight.
  • Use a trim panel tool or your fingers to remove the cover.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not get lost.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Reach behind the lamp and locate the bulb socket.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Press the old bulb into the socket and twist or pull it out, depending on the socket style.
  • Install the new bulb firmly into the socket.
  • Make sure the bulb is seated straight and fully locked in place.
  • Do not touch the glass with bare fingers.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Align the socket tabs with the lamp opening.
  • Insert the socket into the housing.
  • Twist it clockwise by hand until it locks.

Step 6: Test the light

  • Turn the lights on and check that the new bulb works.
  • If replacing a brake/turn bulb, press the brake pedal or activate the turn signal to test it.
  • If the bulb does not light, remove the socket and recheck the bulb seating.

Step 7: Reassemble the trunk trim

  • Reinstall the access cover.
  • Put the trunk side trim back in place.
  • Reinstall any clips you removed.
  • Repeat the same steps on the other side.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both rear lights at night or with the trunk open.
  • Verify brake lights, tail lights, and turn signals if that bulb shares functions.
  • Make sure both lamp covers and trim panels are fully seated.
