Step-by-step taillamp removal with tools/parts list, LED vs bulb checks, and 22 in-lb torque spec for 2017, 2018
🔧 Acadia - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Acadia, the rear bulbs are serviced by removing the taillamp assembly from the body, then twisting the bulb sockets out of the housing. Some SLT taillamps are LED and don’t have replaceable “bulbs” for certain functions, so we’ll confirm what you’re replacing before you buy parts.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching the sockets/housing.
- ⚠️ Do not touch new halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the taillamp as you pull it out so it doesn’t scratch paint or fall.

- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
- Rear taillamp assembly (if LED/non-serviceable) - Qty: 1 (only if needed)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the taillamp fasteners.
- Decide which side(s) you’re doing: left, right, or both.
- Tip: Take a quick photo of the lamp wiring first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm you have replaceable bulbs
- Turn the lights on briefly and identify what’s out (tail/running, brake, turn, reverse), then turn them back OFF.
- If the function that’s out is an LED strip (no obvious “bulb” glow), it may require a taillamp assembly instead of a bulb.
Step 2: Access the taillamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate.
- On the inside edge near the taillamp, use a trim panel removal tool to remove the small access cover (if equipped).
Step 3: Remove the taillamp retaining nuts
- Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the taillamp retaining nuts.
- Set the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t drop into the body.
Step 4: Pull the taillamp assembly off the body
- Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pin(s).
- If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pulling—do not pry against painted surfaces.
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab; use needle-nose pliers only if needed (don’t crush the tab).
Step 5: Remove and replace the bulb(s)
- On the back of the taillamp, locate the bulb socket for the function you’re replacing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (or twist if it’s a twist-lock style).
- Install the new bulb, matching the bulb number printed on the old bulb.
- Apply a very thin film of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry.
- Reinstall the socket and twist clockwise until fully seated.
- Tip: Match the old bulb number exactly.
Step 6: Reinstall the taillamp assembly
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Align the lamp’s locating pin(s) and press the assembly straight into place.
- Install the retaining nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench (in-lb) (specialty) with a 10mm socket to tighten the nuts: Torque to 22 in-lbs (2.5 Nm).
- Reinstall the access cover using the trim panel removal tool (press in place by hand).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side (if replacing both sides)
- Repeat Steps 2-6 for the opposite taillamp.
âś… After Repair
- Test tail/running lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- If a new bulb still doesn’t work, recheck that the socket is fully locked and the connector is clicked in.
- Confirm the lamp is seated flush with the body and not pinching the harness.
