How to Replace Both Taillight Bulbs on a 2016 Volvo XC60
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, safety tips, and testing guidance
🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Replacement
Your XC60 uses serviceable rear lamp bulbs on bulb-equipped positions. Replacing both sides together keeps the rear lighting balanced and avoids doing the job twice. If one side has LED lighting, that side may require a lamp assembly instead of a bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want to avoid shorting a circuit while working.
- Do not touch glass bulb surfaces with bare fingers; oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
- Make sure the lamp housing is fully seated and sealed after repair.
- If a bulb does not fit the socket type, stop and verify the correct bulb style before forcing it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access to the rear lamp bulbs
- Open the tailgate.
- Use a trim clip removal tool and flat-blade screwdriver to carefully remove the rear access cover or trim panel behind the taillight area.
- Set the panel and clips aside in order.
Step 2: Remove the bulb holder
- Reach behind the taillight and locate the bulb holder.
- Twist the bulb holder counterclockwise by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver if the holder is snug.
- Pull the bulb holder straight out of the lamp housing.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Remove the old bulb from the socket.
- Install the new bulb using clean gloves.
- Make sure the bulb sits fully in the socket and matches the original style.
- Do not force the bulb into the socket.
Step 4: Test the bulb before reassembly
- Reconnect the bulb holder to the lamp housing temporarily.
- Turn on the parking lights, brake lights, or turn signals as needed to confirm the bulb works.
- If the bulb does not light, check the socket orientation and bulb fit.
Step 5: Reinstall the bulb holder and trim
- Insert the bulb holder back into the taillight housing.
- Twist it clockwise until it locks in place.
- Reinstall the access cover or trim panel using the trim clip removal tool if needed.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same steps on the opposite taillight.
- Confirm both bulbs work before finishing.
✅ After Repair
- Check tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals from behind the vehicle.
- Make sure the rear access covers are fully installed.
- Verify there are no warning messages on the dash.
