🔧 Taillight Bulb Replacement - Repair

Assumption: This applies to the serviceable rear taillight bulbs on your Golf, not a sealed LED lamp assembly.

Replacing both rear taillight bulbs is a simple job. You’ll access each lamp from inside the hatch area, remove the bulb holder, swap the bulbs, and reinstall everything. If one bulb is out, it’s smart to replace both sides so the lighting stays even.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool first if the lights were recently on. Bulbs can get very hot.
  • Handle new bulbs with clean gloves or a clean cloth. Oil from your fingers can shorten bulb life.
  • Do not touch exposed metal contacts with a metal tool while the battery is connected.
  • If your Golf has LED taillamps, the bulb may not be serviceable. In that case the lamp assembly must be replaced.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

  • Rear taillight bulbs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hatch and clear the rear cargo area so you can access both lamp housings.
  • Turn off all lights and remove the key.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hatch and access the taillamp covers

  • Open the rear hatch.
  • Move aside any cargo trim panels or covers blocking access to the back of each taillight.
  • Use a trim panel tool if a cover is clipped in place.

Step 2: Remove the taillight bulb holder

  • Reach behind the taillight assembly and locate the bulb holder.
  • Twist the bulb holder counterclockwise by hand. If it is tight, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently at the edge.
  • Pull the bulb holder straight out.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the failed bulb from the holder.
  • Install the new rear taillight bulb into the same socket.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully seated and matches the original style.

Step 4: Reinstall the bulb holder

  • Align the holder with the taillight opening.
  • Push it in straight and twist clockwise to lock it.
  • Do not force it.

Step 5: Repeat for the other side

  • Perform the same steps on the opposite taillight.
  • Use the same tools and bulb type on both sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the parking lights and brake lights on to confirm both bulbs work.
  • Check the turn signals and reverse lights while you are there.
  • Close the hatch and make sure no warning light is on in the dash.
