🔧 Highlander - Taillight Bulb Replacement

This job replaces the rear taillight bulbs on both sides. On your Highlander, the outer rear lamp assemblies are removed from inside the liftgate area, then the bulb sockets are twisted out and swapped.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlight switch off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Use gloves so skin oils do not shorten bulb life.
  • Support the lamp assembly with your hand when removing the retaining nuts so it does not drop.
  • If your Highlander has LED rear lamps instead of replaceable bulbs, the full lamp assembly must be replaced.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulb set - Qty: 1 pair

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and open the liftgate.
  • Work on one side at a time so you can compare the old bulb and socket before reassembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the rear access area

  • Open the liftgate and locate the rear access panel behind each taillight assembly.
  • Use the trim panel tool to gently release the panel if needed.

Step 2: Remove the taillight retaining nuts

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the rear lamp retaining nuts.
  • Keep the nuts in a safe place.
  • Hold the lamp with your other hand.

Step 3: Pull the lamp assembly outward

  • Gently pull the taillight assembly straight back to release the locating pins.
  • Do not twist hard or pry against the painted body panel.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it from the lamp housing.
  • If it is tight, use needle-nose pliers carefully on the socket tabs.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb in fully until it seats.
  • Do not touch the glass with bare fingers.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock it.
  • Align the lamp pins with the body openings and press the assembly into place.
  • Install the retaining nuts with the 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same steps for the opposite taillight.
  • Replace both bulbs in pairs so the brightness matches.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the parking lights on and confirm both taillights illuminate.
  • Press the brake pedal and check both brake lamps if the bulb circuit shares the same housing.
  • Check that the lamp assemblies sit flush with the body.
