How to Replace Both Taillight Bulbs on a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder (Brake/Turn & Running)
Step-by-step rear lamp housing removal, bulb types, tools list, testing tips, and reinstallation guidance

🔧 Pathfinder - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each rear taillight housing, swap the burned-out bulb(s), then reinstall the housing. This is usually done from the outside with the liftgate open, and it avoids taking apart interior panels.
Assumption: Your Pathfinder has replaceable rear combination-lamp bulbs (not a sealed LED lamp).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn all lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can burn your fingers.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the taillight housing as you pull it free so you don’t scratch paint.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep metal tools away from bulb sockets.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the taillight mounting screws.
- Lay a clean microfiber towel on the bumper corner under the taillight to protect paint.
- A plastic trim tool is a non-marring pry tool that helps release clips without scratching.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the left taillight housing
- Open the liftgate and locate the taillight mounting screws along the inner edge of the taillight.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screws.
- With one hand supporting the lamp, pull the taillight housing straight rearward to release the locating pins/clips.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool set to gently start the separation at the seam. Pull straight back, not sideways.
- Torque: N/A (snug by hand on reassembly)
Step 2: Remove and replace the bulb(s)
- Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it from the housing.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (most are a “push-in” style).
- Put on nitrile gloves and install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- Reinstall the socket into the housing and turn clockwise until it stops (locked).
- Use a flashlight to confirm the rubber seals and socket tabs are seated evenly.
Step 3: Test the lights before reinstalling the housing
- Turn the ignition to ON.
- Turn on the parking lights and verify the taillight is on.
- Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and verify the brake light is bright.
- Turn on the left turn signal and verify it flashes correctly.
- Turn ignition back OFF when testing is complete.
Step 4: Reinstall the left taillight housing
- Line up the housing locating pins with the body holes.
- Press the housing straight inward until it sits flush with the body.
- Reinstall the screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten evenly.
- Torque: N/A (snug by hand; do not overtighten)
Step 5: Repeat on the right side
- Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for the right taillight using the same Phillips #2 screwdriver, plastic trim tool set, and flashlight.
✅ After Repair
- Do a final check: parking lights, brake lights, hazard flashers, and both turn signals.
- Make sure both housings sit flush and there are no gaps at the body seam.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, remove that socket and confirm the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
