How to Replace Both Taillight Bulbs on a 2016 Kia Sorento (Brake/Tail 7443)
Step-by-step taillight assembly removal, tools/parts list, torque specs, and safety checks

🔧 Sorento - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each rear taillight assembly, swap the bulb(s), and reinstall everything securely. This is usually done from inside the cargo area and takes just a few basic hand tools.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool—halogen bulbs can be hot right after use.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; oils from fingers can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the lamp when loosening nuts so it doesn’t drop or scratch paint.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear tail/brake light bulb (dual-filament, typically 7443) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the rear liftgate for access and lighting.
- Assumption: You’re replacing the main tail/brake bulbs (one per side). If you meant turn signal or reverse bulbs, the access is similar but the bulb type differs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight fasteners (inside cargo area)
- Open the liftgate and locate the small interior access cover behind each taillight area.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry off the access cover.
- Use a flashlight to clearly see the nuts and wiring.
Step 2: Remove the taillight assembly (one side at a time)
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the taillight retaining nuts.
- Place the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trim.
- From outside, hold the taillight and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins (do not pry against paint).
- Tip: Wiggle straight back, not sideways.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- With the lamp loose, locate the tail/brake bulb socket (usually the larger dual-filament socket).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Tip: Don’t touch the glass with bare fingers.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and taillight
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Align the taillight pins with the body holes, then press straight forward until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs)
- Snap the interior access cover back in place.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other taillight.
âś… After Repair
- Turn on the parking lights to confirm both taillights illuminate evenly.
- Press the brake pedal (or have someone help) to confirm both brake lights get brighter.
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and reseat the bulb firmly.
