How to Replace Both Taillight Bulbs on a 2016 INFINITI QX50 (Left & Right)
Step-by-step bulb swap from the cargo trim access panels with tools, parts, torque specs, and testing tips
🔧 QX50 - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your QX50, the rear taillight bulbs sit behind the interior cargo-area side trim, inside the left and right rear lamp housings. You’ll open the access panels, twist the bulb socket out, swap bulbs, then reinstall everything and test the lights.
Assumption: You’re replacing the standard rear tail/stop (running/brake) bulbs in the outer rear lamp housings (not an LED lamp assembly).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; hot bulbs can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers (oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support trim panels gently to avoid cracking clips.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate and remove any cargo so you can access the side panels.
- Lay a clean rag nearby to set parts on.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the left rear lamp bulb socket
- Use a flashlight to locate the small access door/cover in the left rear cargo-side trim.
- Open the access door. If a clip is holding it, gently pry using a plastic trim removal tool.
- If any fastener is present, remove it using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet (varies by panel style).
Step 2: Remove the taillight bulb socket (left side)
- Reach in and find the taillight bulb socket going into the back of the lamp housing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter-turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
- Bulb “socket” = the plastic holder the bulb sits in.
Step 3: Replace the bulb (left side)
- Put on nitrile gloves to keep oils off the new bulb.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Apply a very small film of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (do not smear grease on the bulb glass).
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and close up (left side)
- Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it stops.
- Reinstall the access door/fasteners using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet.
- If you use a torque wrench on any 10mm trim nuts/bolts: Torque to 3-5 Nm (27-44 in-lbs).
Step 5: Repeat the same process on the right side
- Move to the right rear cargo-side access door.
- Use the same steps: open access door, twist socket out, swap bulb, reinstall.
- Use a flashlight to confirm you’re removing the same style socket as the left side.
Step 6: Function test
- With the liftgate still open, turn the light switch ON to check the running lights.
- Have a helper press the brake pedal to verify both brake lights work.
- If a new bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket again and reseat the bulb fully.
✅ After Repair
- Confirm running lights are even brightness on both sides.
- Confirm brake lights illuminate quickly and equally.
- Make sure the access doors are fully latched so they don’t rattle.
