🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replacing both rear taillight bulbs on your Corolla is a quick job. On this model, the rear lamp bulb is accessed from inside the trunk, so you do not need to remove the whole taillight housing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlights and ignition off before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool down first if the lights were on recently; bulbs get very hot.
  • Use gloves or a clean cloth when handling new halogen bulbs. Oil from your fingers can shorten bulb life.
  • Keep the trunk lid supported and make sure tools do not scratch the paint.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear stop/tail light bulbs - Qty: 2
  • Bulb socket seal - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove loose cargo so you can reach both rear lamp access covers.
  • Turn the light switch off and remove the key or keep the fob away from the vehicle.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk access area

  • Open the trunk and locate the small access covers behind each taillight assembly.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the side trim retainers if needed for better access.

Step 2: Remove the bulb access cover

  • Pull off the rear lamp access cover by hand.
  • If a fastener is in the way, use a 10mm socket with a 1/4-inch ratchet and extension bar to move the trim panel as needed.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out of the taillight housing.
  • Do not force it.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Press the old bulb in slightly, twist it counterclockwise, and remove it from the socket.
  • Install the new rear stop/tail bulb by pushing it in and twisting it clockwise until it locks.
  • Use gloves while handling the new bulb.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Align the socket tabs with the housing and twist it clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Make sure the socket sits fully seated and the seal is not pinched.

Step 6: Test the new bulbs

  • Turn on the parking lights and then press the brake pedal to confirm both rear bulbs work.
  • If one side does not light, remove the socket again and check bulb orientation.

Step 7: Reassemble the trunk trim

  • Reinstall the access cover and any trim clips you removed.
  • Make sure everything is secure and the trunk closes normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Check tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals one more time.
  • Look at the rear of the car in a dark area to confirm both sides are equally bright.
  • If a bulb does not work, recheck the socket and bulb fitment.
