🔧 Altima - Taillight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both rear taillight bulbs on your Altima is a beginner-friendly job. You will access the rear lamp bulb sockets from inside the trunk, remove the old bulbs, and install new matching bulbs so the vehicle is visible and legal at night.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off before starting so the bulb sockets are not powered.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Altima on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch fully off.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo near the left and right rear corners.
- A trim clip removal tool is a small pry tool used to lift plastic fasteners without breaking them.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Trunk and Locate the Rear Lamp Access Area
- Use the trunk release or key fob to open the trunk.
- Use a flashlight to look at the inner trunk liner near the left taillight area.
- You will see carpeted trim covering the back side of the taillight housing.
Step 2: Move the Trunk Trim Aside
- Use a trim clip removal tool to gently lift the plastic trunk liner clips near the taillight area.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a 1/4 inch flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry under the clip head.
- Use 6 inch needle-nose pliers only if a clip is partly loose and needs a gentle pull.
- Pull the carpeted liner back just enough to reach the bulb sockets.
- Do not crease the trunk liner.
Step 3: Identify the Taillight Bulb Socket
- Use a flashlight to inspect the rear of the lamp assembly.
- The taillight bulb socket is the socket for the red rear running light.
- A bulb socket is the twist-in plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp housing.
- On your Altima, turn the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
Step 4: Remove the Old Left Taillight Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
- Remove the old bulb from the socket by pulling it straight out.
- If the bulb is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling by hand.
- Do not use metal tools directly on the bulb glass.
Step 5: Install the New Left Taillight Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new bulb.
- Push the new taillight bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise by hand until it locks.
- No torque wrench is used here; tighten by hand only until snug.
Step 6: Test the Left Taillight
- Turn the parking lights on from the headlight switch.
- Check that the left taillight illuminates red.
- Turn the lights back off before continuing.
- Testing now avoids reopening trim later.
Step 7: Repeat on the Right Side
- Use the trim clip removal tool to release the right-side trunk liner clips.
- Use the flashlight to locate the right taillight bulb socket.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- Pull the old bulb straight out by hand.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket using nitrile gloves.
- Reinstall the socket and turn it clockwise by hand until locked.
Step 8: Final Light Check
- Turn the parking lights on again.
- Walk behind your Altima and confirm both rear taillights glow evenly.
- Press the brake pedal and confirm the brake lights still work.
- Turn the hazard lights on and confirm rear turn signals still flash normally.
Step 9: Reinstall the Trunk Trim
- Use your hands to move the carpeted liner back into its original position.
- Push the plastic clips back into place by hand.
- If needed, use the 1/4 inch flat-blade screwdriver only to guide the clip, not to force it.
- Make sure the trunk liner sits flat and does not pinch any wiring.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both taillights work with the parking lights on.
- ✅ Confirm brake lights, turn signals, and hazards still operate normally.
- ✅ Check again at night or in a shaded area to verify both bulbs are equal brightness.
- ✅ If a new bulb does not light, remove it and reinstall it firmly in the socket.
