🔧 Wrangler - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Wrangler, the rear bulb(s) are accessed by removing each taillight housing from the outside of the body. You’ll swap the bulb in the socket, then reinstall the housing and test all rear lighting functions.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🔸 Let the bulbs cool first—taillight bulbs can get hot.
- 🔸 Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- 🔸 Support the lamp so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.

- Rear stop/tail light bulb (3157 type) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Make sure all exterior lights are switched OFF.
- If you’re unsure which bulb is out, have someone press the brake while you check the rear lights first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the driver-side taillight housing
- Open the tailgate.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two taillight screws on the inboard edge (near the tailgate opening).
- Hold the housing and pull it straight rearward to release the locating pins.
- If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim tool to gently help it pop loose. Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket from the housing
- Locate the socket for the bulb you’re replacing (usually the larger dual-filament stop/tail bulb socket).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter-turn by hand, then pull it out.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if needed).
- Put on nitrile gloves and press the new 3157 type bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Optional: Apply a very thin film of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and taillight housing
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
- Line up the locating pins on the taillight with the body grommets and press the housing straight in.
- Reinstall the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and snug them evenly. Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)
Step 5: Repeat on the passenger-side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 on the other taillight.
Step 6: If the “taillight bulb” you meant is a different function
- If your reverse lights or turn signals are out instead, remove the housing the same way and swap the correct socket/bulb from the back of the lamp.
- Use the same Phillips #2 screwdriver process; the sockets twist out the same way.
âś… After Repair
- Test: parking lights (tail), brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- If a new bulb doesn’t work, remove it and confirm it’s fully seated, then re-check the socket lock.
- Watch for moisture inside the lens over the next few days (could indicate a seal issue).
