How to Replace Both Taillight Bulbs on a 2015-2023 Jeep Renegade (Left & Right)
Step-by-step taillamp removal, bulb swap, tools/parts list, safety tips, and quick function test for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023
🔧 Renegade - Taillight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
You’ll remove each rear lamp assembly, twist out the bulb socket(s), and swap the bulb(s). This is usually quick because the bulbs are serviced from behind the lamp housing—no bumper removal needed.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch glass bulb surfaces with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the lamp so it doesn’t drop and scratch paint.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Torx T30 screwdriver
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Small pick tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Microfiber towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulb(s) - Qty: 2
- Bulb socket O-ring (if damaged) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (electrical) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate so you can access the lamp screws on each side.
- Lay a microfiber towel on the bumper corner under the lamp area to protect paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulb(s) you’re replacing
- Turn the lights on and have someone press the brake (or back up carefully near a wall) to confirm what’s out.
- If you’re replacing “both taillight bulbs,” that usually means the left and right outer lamp bulbs (running/brake). If it’s turn signal or reverse, the socket location may be different.
Step 2: Remove the taillamp screws (one side)
- Open the liftgate and look at the inboard edge of the lamp (the side facing the liftgate opening).
- Use a Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the lamp retaining screws.
- If your screws are Phillips-head instead, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Put the screws somewhere safe.
Step 3: Release the lamp from its locating pins
- Hold the lamp with one hand.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry at the seam if needed.
- Pull the lamp straight rearward (away from the vehicle). Don’t yank sideways.
- A “locating pin” is a plastic peg that aligns the lamp—pulling straight helps avoid breaking it.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket
- Behind the lamp, find the bulb socket for the failed light.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn by hand and pull it out.
- If the tab is stuck, use a small pick tool gently to help lift the lock tab (do not stab the wiring).
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Remove the old bulb (most pull straight out; some twist—match what the old one does).
- Install the new bulb fully seated.
- Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease (electrical) to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Quick function test before reassembly
- Reinsert the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
- Turn on the lights and confirm the bulb works (running light/brake/turn as applicable).
Step 7: Reinstall the lamp assembly
- Align the locating pin(s) and guide the lamp into place by hand.
- Press straight in until it sits flush with the body.
- Reinstall the screws using a Torx T30 screwdriver or Phillips #2 screwdriver and snug them evenly. Snug, not super tight.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–7 for the other rear lamp.
âś… After Repair
- Verify all rear functions: running lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and hazards.
- Make sure both lamp housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
- If a new bulb still doesn’t work, swap the left/right bulb to confirm it’s not a socket or wiring issue.
