🔧 Suburban - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove each rear taillamp assembly, swap the bulbs in the socket(s), then reinstall the lamp. This restores tail/running lights (and often brake/turn on this model, depending on which bulb you’re replacing).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: You’re replacing the outer left + right taillamp bulbs (common type: 7443); match the new bulb to the old one.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and don’t touch glass bulbs with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Support the taillamp when it comes loose so it doesn’t scratch paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension (1/4" drive)
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight bulb (typical: 7443 dual-filament) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch OFF.
  • Open the liftgate fully for access to the taillamp fasteners.
  • Trim tool = plastic pry tool that won’t scratch paint.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate.
  • At the inboard edge of the taillamp (the side closest to the liftgate opening), locate the two mounting fasteners.
  • Use a flashlight to clearly see the fasteners.

Step 2: Remove the taillamp assembly (one side)

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the two fasteners.
  • Grip the taillamp and pull it straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving. Pull straight back, not sideways.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Identify the socket for the bulb you’re replacing (tail/stop is commonly the larger dual-filament bulb).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it, then pull it out of the lamp housing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • If you have it, apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and taillamp

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Align the taillamp locating pins with their holes, then push the lamp straight forward until it sits flush.
  • Reinstall the two fasteners using the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lb)

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2–5 for the opposite taillamp.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and confirm both taillights illuminate evenly.
  • Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm brake lights work.
  • Turn on hazards and verify left/right flashing.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb fully, then recheck.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,000-₹3,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹300-₹1,500 (parts only)

You Save: ₹700-₹1,500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹2,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
