🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Replacement

Assumption: This applies if your F-150 has bulb-service taillamps. If the rear lamp is LED-sealed, the bulbs are not replaceable and the whole lamp assembly must be replaced.

Replacing both rear taillight bulbs is a quick job once the lamp housing is removed. On this truck, the outside bulbs are typically serviced from inside the bed area by removing the taillight assembly and swapping the bulbs from the back.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Do not touch glass bulbs with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Support the taillight as you remove the last fastener so it does not drop.
  • If your truck has LED taillamps, the bulbs are not serviceable.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Remove the taillight assembly

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use an 8mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the two taillight retaining bolts.
  • Pull the taillight straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • Do not pry hard.

Step 2: Access the bulb sockets

  • Reach behind the taillight housing and locate the bulb sockets.
  • Twist each socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out.

Step 3: Replace both bulbs

  • Remove the old bulb from each socket.
  • Install the new bulb into the socket.
  • Make sure each bulb is seated fully and straight.
  • Keep the glass clean.

Step 4: Reinstall the taillight

  • Insert each socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock it.
  • Align the taillight locating pins with the body openings.
  • Push the lamp into place.
  • Install the two retaining bolts with the 8mm socket and tighten snugly.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Check both sides for proper fit and no gaps.
