🔧 Escape - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Escape, the rear bulbs sit in sockets behind each taillamp assembly. Replacing both sides is mainly trim access, removing the lamp retaining nuts, then swapping the bulbs without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the lamp as you pull it out so it doesn’t scratch paint.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and make sure the shifter is in Park.
- 🧰 Open the liftgate and keep it fully supported.
- 🔍 Decide which bulbs you’re replacing (tail/brake/turn/reverse) by turning on the lights and checking what’s out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillamp retaining nuts
- Use a trim panel tool to open/remove the small interior access cover behind the taillamp area (inside the cargo opening).
- Use a small flashlight to locate the taillamp retaining nuts.
Step 2: Remove the taillamp assembly (one side)
- Use an 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the taillamp retaining nuts.
- With both hands, pull the taillamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Wiggle gently; don’t pry on paint.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- Identify the socket for the failed function (tail/brake/turn/reverse).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Put on clean nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some types may require a slight wiggle).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test before bolting up
- Reinsert the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Turn the lights on and verify the bulb works (tail/brake/turn/reverse as applicable).
Step 6: Reinstall the taillamp assembly
- Align the lamp’s locating pins with the body and press the lamp straight into place.
- Install the retaining nuts using an 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the interior access cover using the trim panel tool.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-6 for the opposite taillamp.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check all rear functions: tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
- ✅ Make sure both lamps sit flush and the liftgate weather seal isn’t pinched.
- ✅ If a bulb still doesn’t work, re-check the socket is fully locked and the bulb is fully seated.
