šŸ”§ Durango - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Durango, replacing ā€œtaillight bulbsā€ can mean different bulbs (tail/running, brake, turn signal, reverse). Some SRT taillamps are LED and don’t have replaceable bulbs—those require replacing the whole lamp assembly instead.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Let the exhaust area cool before reaching behind the bumper area.
  • šŸ‘“ Wear safety glasses when removing trim/lamps.
  • šŸ”Œ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
  • šŸ–ļø Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear lamp bulb (matching the function you’re replacing) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
  • Taillamp assembly - Qty: 2 If your lamps are LED/non-serviceable

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • šŸ…æļø Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • šŸ” Identify the exact bulb you mean: tail/running, brake, turn, or reverse.
  • āœ… Quick check: with the liftgate open, look at the taillamp—if you can see twist-out bulb sockets behind the lamp, you have replaceable bulbs; if it’s a sealed LED unit, you won’t find bulb sockets.

Two quick questions so I can match the exact bulb:

  • Which lights are out: tail/running, brake, turn, or reverse?
  • When you open the liftgate, do you see twist-out bulb sockets behind the taillamp, or is it a sealed LED lamp?

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the liftgate and access the lamp screws

  • Open the liftgate fully.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the inboard edge of the taillamp (the edge closest to the liftgate opening).
  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver to remove the visible lamp retaining screws.
  • Tip: Press firmly to avoid stripping Torx heads.

Step 2: Remove the taillamp assembly from the body

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently start the lamp moving outward.
  • Support the lamp with your hand and pull it straight back/out (do not twist hard).
  • If it feels stuck, re-check for any missed screws using the flashlight.
  • Tightening note: If no torque spec is available, reinstall screws snug by hand—do not overtighten (plastic lamp housing).

Step 3: If equipped with replaceable bulbs, remove the bulb socket

  • Locate the bulb socket(s) on the back of the lamp.
  • Turn the correct socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
  • If the socket is tight, use a clean nitrile gloves grip and turn steadily.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (or twist, depending on bulb style).
  • Install the new bulb of the same type.
  • Apply a very thin film of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
  • Tip: Don’t touch bulb glass with bare fingers.

Step 5: Reinstall socket, reinstall lamp, and repeat on the other side

  • Reinsert the socket and turn clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Align the lamp’s locating pins and push the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the retaining screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver (snug only).
  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other taillamp.

Step 6: If your taillamps are sealed LED (no bulb sockets)

  • Remove the lamp as in Steps 1–2.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab; use a small flathead screwdriver only if needed to gently assist the tab.
  • Install the replacement taillamp assembly, reconnect the connector, and reinstall screws snug using a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver.

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸ”¦ Turn the ignition ON and test: tail/running lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.
  • šŸ‘€ Verify the lamp sits flush with the body and there are no gaps (helps prevent water leaks).
  • āš ļø If a bulb still doesn’t work, re-check the socket is fully locked and the connector is fully seated.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$60 (parts only, if bulbs) / $250-$700 (if LED lamp assemblies)

You Save: $50-$150 by doing it yourself (bulb replacement)!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
