🔧 Grand Cherokee - Taillight Bulb Replacement
On your Grand Cherokee, the rear bulbs are accessed by removing each outer taillight housing from the body, then twisting the bulb socket out. You’ll do the same process on the left and right side.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can get very hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch a new glass bulb with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If your taillights are LED, the red taillight/brake lights may not use replaceable bulbs (assembly replacement instead).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear tail/stop light bulb (match bulb number from old bulb) - Qty: 2
- Rear turn signal bulb (if replacing that bulb too, match bulb number from old bulb) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the liftgate to access the taillight fasteners.
- Have a flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify what you’re replacing (quick check)
- Turn on the parking lights to confirm the taillights illuminate, then turn them back off.
- If the red taillight/brake light area looks like a smooth “LED strip” (no bulb hotspot), it may be an LED assembly (no replaceable bulb for that function).
- Tip: Take a quick photo before disassembly.
Step 2: Remove the left taillight housing
- Open the liftgate.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the exposed screws along the inboard edge of the left taillight (the side facing the liftgate opening).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the taillight housing straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Support the housing so it doesn’t scratch the paint.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket and replace the bulb
- Locate the socket for the bulb you’re replacing on the back of the housing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it. If it’s tight, use a nitrile glove for grip.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- If it’s a glass bulb, wear nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.
Step 4: Reinstall the left housing
- Reinsert the socket and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the housing pins and press the taillight straight into place.
- Reinstall the screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten snug (do not overtighten).
Step 5: Repeat the same steps on the right side
- Repeat Steps 2 through 4 for the right taillight.
- Use the small flashlight to confirm the sockets are fully seated and locked before reinstalling.
Step 6: Function test
- Turn on parking lights and verify both taillights work.
- Press the brake pedal and verify both brake lights work (a helper is useful).
- Turn on hazards and verify both rear turn signals flash.
âś… After Repair
- Recheck that both housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
- If a new bulb doesn’t light, remove that socket and rotate it 180° (some wedge bulbs can be polarity-sensitive depending on bulb type).
- If moisture appears later, recheck that the housing is fully seated and the seals are clean.

Quick question (so I can match the exact bulbs):
- What bulb number is printed on your old taillight bulb (example: 3157, 7443, 7440, 921)?
- Are you replacing the red tail/brake light bulb, the turn signal bulb, or both?
