🔧 QX80 - Taillight Bulb Replacement

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear taillight bulb(s) (outer lamp, as equipped) - Qty: 2-4
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to P.
- Open the liftgate for access and good lighting.
- Tip: Lay a towel on the bumper edge.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the taillight fasteners (one side)
- Open the liftgate.
- Use a flashlight to locate the small interior access cover behind the taillight area (left or right cargo trim).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pop the access cover open.
Step 2: Remove the taillight mounting nuts
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the taillight mounting nuts.
- Place the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t get lost in the trim.
Step 3: Pull the taillight assembly out
- From outside the vehicle, hold the taillight with both hands.
- Pull the lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins/clips.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool gently at the edge to help start it moving (do not pry hard).
- Tip: Straight back is key—don’t twist.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- With the taillight pulled out, locate the bulb socket(s) on the back of the lamp.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
- If a socket is tight, use nitrile gloves for extra grip.
Step 5: Replace the bulb(s)
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some bulbs may require a slight wiggle).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (do not smear it on the bulb glass).
- Tip: Match bulb base shape before pushing in.
Step 6: Reinstall sockets and test before reassembly
- Insert each socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Turn the lights on and test the functions (parking lights, brake lights, and turn signals).
- If a bulb doesn’t work, turn lights back off and re-check that the bulb is seated and the socket is fully locked.
Step 7: Reinstall the taillight assembly
- Align the lamp’s locating pins with the body holes.
- Push the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the mounting nuts using a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
- Use a small torque wrench (in-lb or low Nm range) and 10mm socket to tighten: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Tip: Snug only—overtightening can crack the lamp.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–7 for the opposite taillight.
âś… After Repair
- Confirm left and right: tail/parking lights, brake lights, and turn signals all work.
- Verify both lamps sit flush with even panel gaps.
- Close the access covers and make sure they latch fully (no rattles).
