🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Replacement

Replace both rear taillight bulbs by removing each lamp housing, swapping the bulbs, and reinstalling the assemblies. This is a straightforward job and usually does not require battery disconnect, but you should handle the bulbs carefully so you do not damage the sockets or lens.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the lamps cool if the truck has been recently driven.
  • Keep the ignition off while working.
  • Do not touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Support the lamp assembly as you remove it so it does not scratch the paint.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulb set - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the lamp fasteners.
  • Turn the ignition off and make sure the lights are off.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the tailgate and access the lamp fasteners

  • Open the tailgate to expose the inner edge of the taillight housing.
  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the lamp fasteners.
  • Set the hardware aside in a safe spot.

Step 2: Remove the taillight assembly

  • Use your hands to gently pull the taillight housing straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, use a trim panel tool very carefully to help release the locating pins.
  • Pull straight back to avoid broken tabs.

Step 3: Remove the bulb sockets

  • Twist each bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it out of the housing.
  • For the bulb you are replacing, press in slightly and turn the bulb counterclockwise to remove it from the socket.
  • Use gloves to keep the new bulb clean.

Step 4: Install the new bulbs

  • Install the new bulb into the socket and turn it clockwise until it locks.
  • Reinsert the socket into the taillight housing and twist it clockwise to secure it.
  • Make sure the socket seats fully so it does not leak or rattle.

Step 5: Reinstall the taillight assembly

  • Align the locating pins and push the lamp housing straight into place.
  • Reinstall the fasteners with the 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension.
  • Torque to snug fit only; do not overtighten the lamp fasteners.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Perform the same procedure on the opposite taillight.
  • Keep the left and right hardware separated so reassembly is easier.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights, brakes, turn signals, and reverse lights to confirm both bulbs work.
  • Check that both lamp housings sit flush with the body.
  • Make sure no bulb warning message appears on the dash.
