🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate
- Use your hands to open the rear liftgate fully.
- Make sure the liftgate is stable and will not close while you are working.
- Good lighting helps a lot.
Step 2: Remove the First Taillight Mounting Bolts
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the two visible bolts on the inner edge of the taillight assembly.
- Set the bolts somewhere safe so they do not roll away.
- No torque is needed during removal.
Step 3: Release the Taillight Assembly
- Use both hands to pull the taillight assembly straight rearward from the body.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool carefully at the outer edge to help release the retaining pins.
- Do not pry against painted metal with a screwdriver.
- Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 4: Locate the Taillight Bulb Socket
- Support the lamp with one hand so the wiring is not stretched.
- Find the taillight bulb socket on the back of the lamp assembly.
- Use your fingers to grip the socket body, not the wires.
Step 5: Remove the Old Taillight Bulb
- Use your hand to turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- Use your fingers to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the bulb base only.
Step 6: Install the New Taillight Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves or a clean microfiber cloth to handle the new bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- Do not force it at an angle.
- If you touch the glass, wipe it clean with the clean microfiber cloth.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the bulb socket back into the taillight housing.
- Use your hand to turn the socket clockwise until it locks.
- The socket should feel snug and should not wobble.
Step 8: Reinstall the Taillight Assembly
- Line up the outer retaining pins with the body openings.
- Use your hands to press the taillight assembly straight forward into place.
- Install the two mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to tighten the bolts.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Snug only; do not overtighten.
Step 9: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the two bolts from the opposite taillight assembly.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool only if the assembly needs help releasing.
- Remove the old bulb, install the new bulb, and reinstall the socket the same way.
- Reinstall the lamp and tighten the bolts to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
Step 10: Test Both Taillights
- Turn the headlight switch to the parking light or headlight position.
- Walk behind your Highlander and confirm both taillights are on.
- Press the brake pedal and confirm the brake lights work too if the bulb is a dual-function bulb.
- Turn the lights off when testing is complete.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both lamp assemblies sit flush with the body.
- ✅ Make sure there are no gaps around the taillight seals.
