🔧 Highlander - Taillight Bulb Replacement

Replacing both rear taillight bulbs on your Highlander is a beginner-friendly job. You’ll remove the rear lamp assemblies, twist out the bulb sockets, replace the bulbs, and test the lights before reinstalling everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off before removing bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull hard on the wiring harness; the bulb sockets are attached to short wiring leads.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves or use a clean cloth when handling bulbs to keep skin oil off the glass.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber cloth

  • Rear taillight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Highlander on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🅿️ Set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • 🚪 Open the liftgate fully so you can access both rear lamp assemblies.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before touching the new bulbs.
  • 📝 A bulb socket is the plastic piece that holds the bulb and twists into the taillight housing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

  • Use your hands to open the rear liftgate fully.
  • Make sure the liftgate is stable and will not close while you are working.
  • Good lighting helps a lot.

Step 2: Remove the First Taillight Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the two visible bolts on the inner edge of the taillight assembly.
  • Set the bolts somewhere safe so they do not roll away.
  • No torque is needed during removal.

Step 3: Release the Taillight Assembly

  • Use both hands to pull the taillight assembly straight rearward from the body.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool carefully at the outer edge to help release the retaining pins.
  • Do not pry against painted metal with a screwdriver.
  • Pull straight back, not sideways.

Step 4: Locate the Taillight Bulb Socket

  • Support the lamp with one hand so the wiring is not stretched.
  • Find the taillight bulb socket on the back of the lamp assembly.
  • Use your fingers to grip the socket body, not the wires.

Step 5: Remove the Old Taillight Bulb

  • Use your hand to turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • Use your fingers to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • If the bulb is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the bulb base only.

Step 6: Install the New Taillight Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves or a clean microfiber cloth to handle the new bulb.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
  • Do not force it at an angle.
  • If you touch the glass, wipe it clean with the clean microfiber cloth.

Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

  • Insert the bulb socket back into the taillight housing.
  • Use your hand to turn the socket clockwise until it locks.
  • The socket should feel snug and should not wobble.

Step 8: Reinstall the Taillight Assembly

  • Line up the outer retaining pins with the body openings.
  • Use your hands to press the taillight assembly straight forward into place.
  • Install the two mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to tighten the bolts.
  • Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Snug only; do not overtighten.

Step 9: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the two bolts from the opposite taillight assembly.
  • Use the plastic trim removal tool only if the assembly needs help releasing.
  • Remove the old bulb, install the new bulb, and reinstall the socket the same way.
  • Reinstall the lamp and tighten the bolts to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).

Step 10: Test Both Taillights

  • Turn the headlight switch to the parking light or headlight position.
  • Walk behind your Highlander and confirm both taillights are on.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm the brake lights work too if the bulb is a dual-function bulb.
  • Turn the lights off when testing is complete.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm both lamp assemblies sit flush with the body.
  • ✅ Make sure there are no gaps around the taillight seals.
  • ✅ Check that the liftgate closes normally and does not contact the lamps.
  • ✅ Recheck the lights at night or against a wall to confirm equal brightness.
