🔧 LaCrosse - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll be accessing the rear lamp housings from inside the trunk, removing the lamp assembly, and swapping the bulbs. This keeps you from breaking the lens and makes the bulb swap much easier.

Assumption: You mean the left + right outer taillight (tail/brake) bulbs (not the reverse or turn-signal bulbs).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool for a few minutes; they can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass part of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the lamp assembly with your hand when it comes loose so it doesn’t scratch the paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/brake light bulb - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you have room to work.
  • Put on clean nitrile gloves to avoid getting oil on the new bulbs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and expose the lamp fasteners

  • Use a flashlight to locate the trunk-side access area behind the taillight.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently peel back or pop free the trunk liner near the lamp area. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps prevent scratches.)

Step 2: Remove the taillight assembly nuts

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the retaining nuts holding the taillight assembly from inside the trunk.
  • Place the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trunk cavity.

Step 3: Pull the taillight assembly straight back

  • With one hand on the outside of the lamp, pull the taillight assembly straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling—don’t pry against the painted body.
  • Pull straight back to avoid breaking locator pins.

Step 4: Remove the bulb socket

  • From the back of the taillight assembly, find the socket for the tail/brake bulb.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it may take a firm tug).
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a very thin smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry. (Dielectric grease helps keep moisture out.)

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test before reassembly

  • Reinsert the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Turn on the parking lights and confirm the taillight illuminates.
  • Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm the brake light gets brighter.

Step 7: Reinstall the taillight assembly

  • Align the lamp’s locator pins with the body holes and push the assembly straight in until it sits flush.
  • Reinstall the nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if you have a small torque wrench; otherwise tighten snug (do not overtighten).

Step 8: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–7 for the other taillight.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify left and right taillights work with parking lights ON.
  • Verify brake lights brighten evenly when the brake is pressed.
  • Check that both lamp assemblies sit flush and don’t wiggle.
  • If you see moisture in the lens later, re-check the socket is fully locked and the seal is seated.
