🔧 Camry - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the left and right rear taillight bulbs (the ones for the running and brake lights) on your Camry. This involves removing the taillight housings from the body, swapping the bulbs, then reinstalling everything and testing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the ignition off, remove the key, and make sure all lights are switched off before you start.
  • 🧤 Let the bulbs cool before touching them; they can be hot right after use.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but avoid turning the lights on with sockets dangling out of the lamp.
  • đź‘€ Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from falling dust or clips.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 10mm socket
  • 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🧰 Short extension bar (1/4" drive)
  • 🧰 Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • 🧰 Small flathead screwdriver
  • 🧤 Nitrile or latex gloves
  • 🦺 Safety glasses
  • 🧽 Clean microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • đź’ˇ Taillight/brake light bulbs (7443 dual-filament) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
  • đź’ˇ Dielectric grease (bulb socket safe) - Qty: 1 tube
  • 🧼 Isopropyl alcohol wipes - Qty: 1 pack
  • 📎 Trunk trim panel clips - Qty: 4–6 (optional, in case any break)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • đźš— Park the Camry on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧳 Empty the trunk area near both taillights so you can reach the trim easily.
  • đź’ˇ Open the trunk so you can access the rear lamp mounting area from inside.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open trunk and move trunk trim aside (left side)

  • Use your hands to gently pull back the fabric trunk liner on the left side, near the taillight area.
  • If any plastic clips hold the liner, use the trim removal tool to gently pry the clip centers up, then remove the clips.
  • If needed, use the small flathead screwdriver to lift the clip center slightly, then switch to the trim tool. Work slowly to avoid breaking clips

Step 2: Remove taillight mounting nuts (left side)

  • Locate the metal studs with nuts holding the taillight to the body (usually 2 nuts) behind the liner.
  • Use the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and extension to remove the nuts.
  • Keep the nuts in a safe place so they don’t fall into the trunk or bumper.
  • Torque on reassembly: 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 3: Remove the taillight assembly from the body (left side)

  • From outside the car, place one hand on the side of the taillight and the other on the rear face.
  • Gently pull the taillight straight back away from the body; there are locating pins that will pop free.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling straight back. Do not pry with metal tools
  • Once loose, support the taillight with one hand so it doesn’t drop or scratch the paint.

Step 4: Disconnect bulb socket and remove old bulb (left side)

  • On the back of the taillight, find the bulb socket for the tail/brake bulb (it’s the larger dual-filament bulb, usually near the center of the housing).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand about a quarter turn and pull it straight out of the taillight.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket using a gentle rocking motion.
  • If it’s stuck, use the clean microfiber cloth in your fingers for better grip.

Step 5: Install the new taillight bulb (left side)

  • With gloves on, take a new 7443 dual-filament bulb and push it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you touch the glass with bare fingers, clean it with an alcohol wipe and let it dry. Oil can shorten bulb life
  • Optional: Apply a very thin smear of dielectric grease to the bulb base contacts, not the glass.
  • Reinsert the bulb and socket into the taillight housing, then twist clockwise until it locks in place.

Step 6: Quick test of the left taillight

  • Gently rest the taillight in position (don’t bolt it yet, just hold or let it sit carefully).
  • Ask a helper to turn the ignition to ON and switch on the parking lights, then press the brake pedal.
  • Check that the left taillight is on for running light and gets brighter when the brake is pressed.
  • Turn the lights off again before continuing.

Step 7: Reinstall the left taillight assembly

  • Align the plastic guide pins on the taillight with the holes in the body.
  • Push the taillight straight in until it sits flush with the body panel.
  • Inside the trunk, reinstall the 10mm nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten each nut snugly.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) – just a firm, light tighten, not “gorilla tight.”

Step 8: Reinstall trunk trim on the left side

  • Fold the trunk liner back into its original position.
  • Reinstall any trim clips: push the clip body in first, then press the center pin in until it sits flush.
  • Check that the liner is not pinched under the taillight studs or wiring.

Step 9: Repeat steps 1–8 for the right side

  • Follow the exact same process on the right side of the trunk and taillight.
  • Use the same 10mm socket, ratchet, and trim tool to remove nuts and clips.
  • Install the second new 7443 bulb on the right side.
  • Torque right-side nuts to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 10: Final test of both taillights

  • Close the trunk gently.
  • Turn ignition to ON, switch on the parking lights, and walk behind the car to confirm both taillights are evenly lit.
  • Press and hold the brake pedal (or have a helper do it) and confirm both sides get brighter.
  • If either side doesn’t work, recheck the bulb seating and socket twist position.

âś… After Repair

  • 🧪 Check all rear lights: tail, brake, turn signals, and reverse, so you know everything is working.
  • đźš— Take a short drive at dusk and have someone follow you to confirm brightness and visibility.
  • 🧴 If you used dielectric grease, wipe any extra from outside the sockets so it doesn’t attract dust.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80–$150 (parts + labor)
